Das Kaokoland -meist als Kaokoveld bezeichnet- ist eine trockene Region im Nordwesten Namibias.
Die dort lebenden Himba leben entsprechend als Jäger und Sammler und Viehzüchter.
Das Kaokoland ist bekannt für sein durch konsequente Bekämpfung der Wilderei inzwischen wieder reiches Wildleben: besonders zu erwähnen sind die hier wieder häufiger vorkommenden Nashörner (nicht zuletzt auch ein Verdienst des "Save the Rhino Trust") und Wüstenelefanten.

Kaokoland is one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Southern Africa.
Kaokoland is well known for its population of Desert Elephant, Black Rhino and occasionally groups of Lions and Giraffe.

Kaokoland is bordered on the south the Hoanib River and on the north the Kunene River which also forms Namibia's border with Angola.
The Himba people who inhabit Kaokoland are the descendants of the earliest Herero's who migrated into this area in the 16th century.
The fl rhino of Kaokoland suffered a fate similar to that of the elephants and by 1983 the population in the east had been exterminated, while only a few individuals survived in the extreme western parts of Kaokoland which makes them a very rare sight.

The Himba Years once completed, according to Rina is going to be released under the auspices of the Namibian National Archives, and she plans to share 50 per cent of all profits on a pro rata basis, with whoever was involved with the filming.
Meanwhile back in Kaokoland, The Himba Years is taking shape, and the dedication of one woman at work will manifest itself for all to see.
I did notice however, from the first time we met that Rina had cut her hair into a short, chick bob, which I assumed was part of the transformation she has undergone for her project in the bowels of Africa.

The Kaokoland, through which the 4x4 trail unwinds, covers some 48 982 square kilometres of largely unspoilt mountain wilderness and is the home of the Himba people – a proud, semi-nomadic tribe of pastoralists.
As the Kaokoland falls into a much greater area known as the Kaokoveld, which includes Damaraland, we feel that it is important that you are given an overview of the topography of the entire area so that you can gain a broader picture of the environment through which you will be travelling.
As this part of the Kaokoland receives a higher rainfall than the areas to the west, the predominant vegetation through which you drive is mopane scrub savannah and the landscape is dominated by granite koppies.

Originally referred to as the Kaokoland district, the remote north-western corner of Namibia is rugged, harsh, untamed and practically devoid of commercial tourist developments.
This hinterland, reached by the Herero during the early southward Bantu migrations about 450 years ago and the Dorstlandtrekkers over 120 years ago is still sparsely inhabited by man. The Himba (or Ovahimba) tribe are Herero descendants who continue their semi-nomadic existence in this primitive wilderness today.

The Himba people share a common ethnic origin with the Hereros, having split from the main Herero group on the Namibia/Botswana border and moved west to present-day Kaokoland in search of available land.
Cattle are central to their way of life, with the size of the herd an indication of wealth and prestige — but overgrazing of the poor soils is a major problem.
The Himba are a minority group in Namibia (less than 1% of the population), and live almost entirely in their traditional areas in remote Kaokoland.

Charcoal samples from abris (rock shelters) in the arid western part of the area indicate two minor humid episodes during the mid and late Holocene, which might correlate with periods of soil formation in central Kaokoland.
The most recent 3000 years once again were characterized by strong eolian processes, possibly caused by the thinning of the woody vegetation due to human influence.
