In the festival, the idols of Kapaleeshwarar and Karpagambal are decorated with clothes and jewels, mounted on a vahanam (Sanskrit for "vehicle"), and then taken around the temple and its water tank in a pradakshinam (a clockwise orbit when seen from above).
It is named after the 63 Nayanmars, and all 63 Nayanmar idols follow the Kapaleeshwarar idol on this procession.
A legend associated with this temple is that Shiva's wife Parvati was distracted by a peacock and did not hear him call out to her.

I visited the temple after a long gap and was pleasantly surprised how spick & span the temple environ is. 3 cheers to the temple management.

My dad had accepted a job outside Chennai and that brought in the biggest change to my life yet.
I was moved away from my nice big strict catholic school, away from the santhome cathedral, away from Kapaleeshwarar kovil, away from the anjaneyar temple around the corner, away from my friends & cousins.
There I was in a 'Town' which probably had about thousand residents, one grocery store, one medical store, 1 perumal temple, 2 resource starved high schools (boys school and a girls school), 1 so called 'hospital' which was actually run by some Doctor who'd just literally scraped through medical school.
