  Proa sailing
I was told that when they first brought their canoes from sandy Kapingamarangi to volcanic Pohnpei, they had experimentally rounded these points so the canoes could be easily dragged ashore on this rocky island.
On our Kapingamarangi canoe this was accomplished by having a standing crew member walk on the outrigger and sometimes lean out while holding the shroud.
His description of the handling of the canoe -- steering entirely with the sail except when running, "tacking" by moving the sail to the other end of the boat (to the total confusion of a neophyte like myself), and the need for continuous bailing -- was very close indeed to my experience.

 Executive Summary
When I became involved with the project, I was told that the Kapingamarangis would be carving the waka siu, their most sacred canoe and that there was one man who still knew the art of carving the canoe, though he was old and physically unable to do the work.
Although the canoes they have made on the atoll since the 1920's were of the Nukuoro type and those built on Pohnpei up through the 1960's were a variation of the traditional Kapingamarangi canoes, it is interesting to note that the Kapingamarangi have continued to carve their traditional style of canoe in model form.
A fair amount of information about the Kapingamarangi and their culture that can be found in reports and documentation done during the early part of this century.

 Pohnpei Vol.11, No.1
The pattern of rainfall in Pohnpei State during the fourth quarter of 2004 was consistent with the pattern typically associated with El Niño (drier than normal on Pohnpei Island and atolls to the west and east, and wet at Kapingamarangi which is near the equator).
The rainfall at Kapingamarangi during October, November, and December was 3.42 inches (71%), 14.20 inches (173%), and 5.96 inches (68%) respectively, for a 3-month total of 23.58 inches (108%).
Based on the gradual demise of weak El Niño conditions during 2005, conditions are anticipated to be drier than normal at Pohnpei Island and atolls, and near normal at Kapingamarangi for the next 3 to 6 months.

Legend has it that the islanders were waving at the WB-50 and, on a whim, the crew gathered whatever goodies they happened to have on board (pencils, gum, cigarettes), put them in a canister, attached a tiny parachute and released the items to the tropical island below.
It is likely that this incident established the legendary date of 1952, but in the article there was no mention of dropping goods or, for that matter, of Kapingamarangi.
Yet in terms of establishing the true history of Christmas Drop, there is no mention whatsoever of the Kapingamarangi story in the 1956 and 1957 articles, just years after that event allegedly took place.

Pohnpei-Between Time & Tide . Porakied, the Kapingamarangi Village
n 1916, a severe drought afflicted the outlying atoll of Kapingamarangi, 400 miles south of Pohnpei Island.
Though their lives were perhaps saved, they were given land in an area so resource-poor and undesirable by Pohnpeians that it was called Pohn rakied (Porakied is a shorter version), meaning 'on the gravel'.
Thus began the growth of Pohnpei's Kapingamarangi Village, where the migrants and their descendents remain to this day.
