Kapiti is unusual because it is one of the few relatively accessible island nature reserves.
Kapiti Island is the summit of a submerged mountain range created by earthquakes 200 million years ago.
Kapiti was the stronghold of the famous Te Rauparaha and a strategic location for Maori military activity as late as the 1830s.

Kapiti Marine Reserve is a nationally significant recreation, education, ecological and scientific resource containing some of the finest underwater scenery in the greater Wellington region.
The Island is known as a sanctuary for kiwi, kaka, takahe, and saddleback and the estuary is a feeding ground for birds and a nursery for a variety of fish.
Kapiti Marine Reserve is 30 kilometres from Wellington city and is located between Paraparaumu and Waikanae beaches and Kapiti Island.

Kapiti has one of the densest populations of robins in New Zealand.
They settled well on Kapiti and have bred successfully, but their future is still not assured on Kapiti as competition for food with other nectar-eating birds, and for nest sites with kakariki, have meant that the stitchbird is barely holding its own.

The Kapiti area is situated on the west coast of the North Island 50km north of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand.
The provisional Rotary Club of Kapiti was sponsored by the Paraparaumu club and conducted its first meeting at the "Hot Pot Tearooms" (now Burger Wisconsin), Paraparaumu Beach on 27 May 1977.
The chartering of the Rotary Club of Kapiti meant that the total number of members enjoying Rotary in the Paraparaumu area was approximately 85 and it was confidently expected that both Clubs, through their Membership and Development Committees, would expand this total in the coming years.

Early indications are that the eradication was successful making Kapiti potentially a doubly unique island in being one of the first reserves in the world to have both possum and rat populations successfully removed.
All of this has meant that Kapiti has become a haven to Native plant and birdlife, being one of the brighter jewels in the crown of nature reserves operated around the country.
I tried to shoot a lot of photographs of the birdlife on Kapiti, it being the primary reason for the existance of the reserve and why it is so wonderful to visit.
