 Kapok
Kapok is the fine, silkily lustrous fruit fibers from the fruit walls of the capsules, 10 - 20 cm in length and 3 cm in thickness, of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra).
Kapok fibers are thus used as stuffing for upholstery, bedding and for acoustic and thermal insulation.
Kapok hairs are not wettable and are thus used for filling life jackets and life belts because the large, air-filled lumen ensures that the kapok fibers have a low density and good buoyancy.

The floss has been important in commerce since the 1890s; the chief source is Ceiba pentandra, the kapok (or silk-cotton) tree, cultivated in Java, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and other parts of East Asia and in Africa, where it was introduced from its native tropical America.
The floss is removed by hand from the pods, dried, freed from seeds and dust, and baled for export.
Kapok is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Malvales, family Bombacaceae.

The silky kapok fiber, or floss, is a tiny cellulose tube with air sealed inside and it is ideal for stuffing life preservers and other water-safety equipment because of its excellent buoyancy.
Moreover there's yet another plusvalence involving the use of kapok fibers: since the ceiba trees grow only naturally and there aren't coltivations of this plant, the use of the kapok silk stimulates the safeguard of these secular plants which are ecologic patrimony of our planet.
