To this day Kapyong stands as a model of consolidation, organized withdrawal under attack by superior force and courage and determination against superior numbers.
Three units were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (US) in recognition of the courage and fortitude displayed in the Battle of Kapyong.
The units that received the honor were two Commonwealth battalions, the 2nd Battalion of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, as well as "A" Company of the 72nd Heavy Tank Battalion, United States Army.

 Australian Casualties, or Kapyong was 'NOT' the Korean War.
However, I must disagree with the remarks of the guest speaker when he mentioned that Kapyong was the first major battle in which the Australians were involved in Korea.
This is not to denigrate those who served in the Kapyong battle, they fought a tremendous action and were well worthy of the Honour bestowed upon them by various governments.
The young diggers who had their baptism of fire at the Apple Orchard, when they went in with a bayonet charge without the support of artillery or mortars, also deserve high praise, not eo be forgotten entirely.

To the North of the city the Kapyong river goes to the base of the 1200 foot Myeongji-san mountains.
Actually it is probably better that the Americans are not mentioned on the memorial because it is quite possibly the dirtiest memorial park I have ever been to.

The Second Battalion was involved in the Battle of Kapyong on April 24 and 25, 1951.
After extremely heavy fighting in the Kapyong Valley -- where Communist forces outnumbered Canadians by eight to one -- the Second Battalion was able to hold off the Chinese forces and by doing so foiled an attempt to attack and recapture the city of Seoul.
For their heroism at Kapyong, the 2PPCLI were awarded the U.S. Presidential Citation for "outstanding heroism and exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services." No other Canadians have ever received this distinction.

Next morning the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade (including the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment) was ordered to the valley of the Kapyong River about 60 kilometres north-east of Seoul, where South Korean forces were being driven back.
During a night of fierce fighting and throughout the daylight hours of 24 April the Australians and a Canadian battalion, supported by a New Zealand artillery regiment, stalled the Chinese advance before eventually withdrawing after dark.
