The Amu Darya River, known in ancient times as the Oxus, is the largest river in central Asia and is formed by the junction of the Pandj and Vakhsh rivers.
The delta, illustrated in the Landsat image (01-i02), is bordered by the Kara Kum desert on the west and the Kyzyl Kum desert on the east.
The Kara Kum consists of a denuded desert plain with abundant salt flats, soft sediment bluffs, and karst topography.

The refugees in the Kara Darya camp are among thousands believed to have fled into Kyrgyzstan after the violence, some settling in the camp and others taken in by relatives.
One of them is a man who said he was shot in the thigh in Andijan and hid with some of his relatives until they were able to take him into Kyrgyzstan, using their experience as strawberry traders to help get him across the border.

Most of the international attention to the need to rehabilitate the tailings dumps has been focused on the town of Maili-Suu in southern Kyrgyzstan's Djalal-Abad Oblast, because these sites potentially could contaminate parts of the Ferghana Valley, one of the Central Asia region's most populous areas.
Should there be a large leakage of radioactive material from the dumps, it could affect not only the Ferghana Valley but also the cities of Khujand and Tashkent, and the lower course of the Syr Darya, possibly reaching what remains of the Aral Sea.
The canyon through which the Maili-Suu River flows is subject to frequent landslides, particularly after heavy rains.
