  Kara Sea - LoveToKnow 1911
KARA SEA, a portion of the Arctic Ocean demarcated, and except on the north-west completely enclosed, by Novaya Zemlya, Vaygach Island and the Siberian coast.
On the southeast Kara Bay penetrates deeply into the mainland, and to the west of this the short Kara river enters the sea.
It had long the reputation of being almost constantly ice-bound, but after the Norwegian captain Johannesen had demonstrated its accessibility in 1869, and Nordenskield had crossed it to the mouth of the Yenisei in 1875, it was considered by many to offer a possible trade route between European Russia and the north of Siberia.

The group's research revealed that the mean salinity of the whole Kara Sea dropped by roughly 0.5 between 1996 and 2000.
However, the increase in river discharge over this period was deemed to be far below the range required to produce a widespread freshening of this magnitude.

Figure 2 shows that observed decadal sea level variability is highly correlated with the simulated sea level change due to variability of thermohaline factors.
Areas of decreasing sea level (negative trend, not shown) are located along the continental slope and in the Alaskan/Canadian Arctic and on average this lowering trend compensates for the SLR along the coastlines and in the center of the ocean.
The rise in sea level is an integrated effect due to processes associated with global warming which have changed the intensity and direction of the atmospheric circulation, ice distribution, rates of sea ice melting and freezing, and temperature and salinity fields.
