If the karabiners are bent cold without subsequent heat treatment in the finishing process (this is usually the case with steel karabiners) then additional high tensions in the bends remain due to reset forces.
Due to the cross section weakening of a fractured karabiner, the safety catch engages during flight, the catch is seated solidly, the bending tensions are reduced and thus the karabiner does not break (hopefully) completely.
The karabiner manufacturers warn for this reason against flights with an open gate obviously unaware that the karabiner is always burdened as if the safety catch were open, due to the gate play.

Karabiner 98k - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Karabiner 98k was a bolt action rifle adopted as the standard infantry rifle in 1935 by Nazi Germany and one of the final developments from the long line of Mauser rifles.
It was derived from the earlier rifles, namely the Karabiner 98b which had itself been developed from the Mauser Model 1898.
It was the standard rifle, though submachine guns were often preferred, especially for urban combat where the rifle's range was not very useful.

 Aspiring Enterprises - Karabiners
In D-shape karabiners we have both screwlock and twistlock karabiners available with a captive pin so that the karabiner can be fitted in position for use on cowstails and lanyards (see Webbing Products).
Pear shape karabiners are also excellent for belaying with belay plates, because the uniformity of the wide end of the karabiner minimises twisting of the rope, especially when belaying with double ropes.
The Gecko karabiners are the larger of the the two and are general purpose locking karabiners, which we stock in the screw-lock and twist-lock versions.

 Abseiling Safety
It has been shown that if a karabiner is tapped smartly on the "spine" (by striking a rock for instance) the gate momentarily flips open.
In order to overcome these problems a screw-gate karabiner is used but it is possible for the sleeve to become unscrewed by being caught or dragged on clothing or muddy rocks and, once it is unscrewed, the karabiner behaves effectively as a non-screw-gate karabiner.
It has been shown that, if a small diameter maillon is used to attach a Stop to the harness, it is possible for it to pass through the "gate latch", so opening the swinging side of the Stop - though this has never, as far as is known, actually happened in use.

UKC Forums - Captive Screwgate Karabiner
My local climbing wall currently has captive eye screwgate karabiners with a welded ring through the eye, attached to two short lengths of chain which are then bolted to the wall structure.
However, at the BMC technical forum last year in Plas y Brenin it was evident during the destruction testing demo that the weak point in a karabiner is the hook in the nose which has a much smaller cross sectional area in comparison to the area where the rope has worn the karabiner.
I would imagine you could probably let the rope wear away the karabiner till it was about the same cross sectional area as that of the nose, before the strength of the karabiner was reduced.

Heating in Top Karabiner During Decent in Top Rope Situation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
After a report of a near accident, we started a research on the heating of a top karabiner or bolt due to rope friction when lowering a person climbing on top rope.
The karabiner was modelled as a cylinder, and it was assumed that the temperature in the cylinder only depended on the axial direction.
Depending on the lowering speed, lowering distance, the weight of the person, and the thickness and material of the karabiner, the temperature at the point of the rope became as high as 250 degrees Celsius, which is the melt temperature of nylon.
