Karakachan is small nomadic community in the Balkan mountains, sheepmen by tradition.
Karakachan are Orthodox Christians, they speak in ancient Greek dialect, and they have preserved their antic rituals and pagan beliefs blended with their orthodox rituals.
For already 12 years Karakachans have been coming together on the first weekend of July in the Karandila region, near the town of Silven, in the north-eastern part of Bulgaria, wearing their traditional clothes, with their dogs, horses and sheep.

We owe to the Karakachans and to their specific, conservative livestock breeding traditions the selection and saving of the most ancient and typical representative of all the coarse-wool, "tzakel" sheep and the most primitive breed of local horse.
Led by their needs, the Karakachan shepherds played the main role in the conservation of this livestock-guarding dog, which fits a number of specific requirements of nomad livestock breeding practice.
Karakachan dogs are shaggy, with coarse, long and thick fur, which protects them from the winter cold and the sharp temperature changes in the mountains.

In the last two centuries historic sources refer to the Karakachans as semi nomads who along with their families and the entire households have been traveling from the alpine mountains to the warm lowlands of the Balkan Peninsula in search of pastures for their flocks.
Among the Balkan ethnic minorities, the Karakachans are the only ethnic community which managed to preserve a semi nomadic way of living until the middle of this century.
All Karakachans are Christians and belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church.
