UZ-QR Karakalpakstan (Uzbek: Qoraqalpog'iston Respublikasi or Қорақалпоғистон Республикаси; Karakalpak: Қарақалпақстан Республикасы or Qaraqalpaqstan Respublikası) is an autonomous republic of Uzbekistan.
The population of Karakalpakstan is estimated at 1,200,000, of whom 400,000 are of the Karakalpak ethic group, 400,000 are Uzbek, and 300,000 are Kazakh.
The ancient oasis of rivers, lakes, reed marshes, forests and farms are drying up, and being poisoned by wind-borne salt and chemicals from the dried bed of the Aral Sea.

Karakalpak is a Northwestern Turkic language mainly spoken mostly by Karakalpaks in Karakalpakstan (Uzbekistan), along the lower Amu Darya river, and around the southern part of the Aral Sea.
Oficially it is called the Republic of Karakalpakstan and is situated southeast and southwest of the Aral Sea.

During the period from 1960 until 1992 the area of the sea was halved and its volume quartered, as the Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya rivers were channeled and dammed to provide irrigation for agriculture.
In Karakalpakstan the fishing industry that once employed tens of thousands of people has gone, and agricultural land is no longer productive, resulting in a rapid loss of employment opportunities for local people.
A policy framework for water supply and environmental sanitation is being developed, which besides providing water supply and sanitation to areas currently without, will contribute to a reduction in water-borne and water-related diseases and improve the nutritional status of the population in general and children in particular.

The project was prepared at the request of the Government of Uzbekistan for FAO's assistance in mitigating the consequences of water shortage in the northern area of Uzbekistan during 1999-2001.
The Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan (KK), which is located at the tail-end of the Amudarya River, and includes its delta into the Aral Sea, was particularly affected by that severe drought.
The main cause of this disaster was mismanagement of water resources in the river basin, compounded by diminishing snow and glacier melt, a declining trend in rainfall, and possible long-term climatic change.
