 PREFACE
The Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda is bordered on the east by the Rift Valley escarpment that drops down into the Kenya territory of Turkana, on the north by the Sudan, on the south by the Mt. Elgon region, and on the west by the home territories of the Teso, Langi, and Acholi peoples.
Karamoja has been seen by these outsiders as a land of lawlessness and primitive culture, inhabited by bloodthirsty people who preyed upon neighboring groups, and were irrationally attached to their cattle, who refused to participate in modern forms of government and the market economy, resisted formal education and Christianity, and avoided paying taxes.
The principal ethnic groups of Karamoja are classically identified within the "Karamojong Cluster," i.e., the Dodoth in the north, the Jie in the center, and the Karimojong in the center-south.

Within Karamoja, the dominant groups are the Dodoth in the north, the Jie in the central region, and in the south a cluster of closely related ethnic groups known as Bokora, Matheniko, and Pian all of whom are referred to generally as the Karimojong.
The widespread insecurity in Karamoja in the latter half of 1979 and early 1980 resulted in many family groups planting far less than in a normal year because people feared to cultivate far from the safety of their relatively well-protected dwellings.
This necessitated a joint Kenya Uganda military operation to quell the violent raiding and displaced an estimated 75% of the population in the extreme south, rendering the whole of Karamoja famine prone in early 1985 (Dodge, 1986: 760).

The Karamoja Apalis (Apalis karamojae) is a globally threatened warbler whose stronghold is thought to lie in woodlands bordering the flood plains of the Wembere Steppe, considered to be the most threatened Important Bird Area in Tanzania.
Since almost nothing is known of its status or ecology, the main objectives of this survey were: to determine the distribution of Karamoja Apalis in the steppe; to measure its abundance and habitat requirements; and to evaluate the extent of recent habitat loss.
In 2003, a survey of the globally threatened warbler Karamoja Apalis in the Wembere Steppe, central Tanzania, confirmed that the species is largely dependent on one particular acacia species - Whistling Thorn – and showed that the warbler’s specialised habitat is less extensive in the steppe than had once been thought1.
