		Manatu is a common lowland forest tree up to 15 metres tall. Unusually, it is regularly leafless in winter. Manatu flowers from mid-spring to mid summer with fruiting through summer to early autumn.
		One of the largest trees in the forest, this has been the most prized tree to Maori. Totara timber was the best for building massive war canoes and was the main timber used for carving. Totara flowers in early summer and smooth red berries form in late summer. Totara look good planted in groups.
		Five-finger is a common native tree found from sea level to 760 metres in forests and open scrub from North Cape to Southland.

		Tuku Reserve houses the small trees Dracophyllum arboreum of the Epacridaceae family, a small family almost confined to Australia and New Zealand; this entire family is very novel and new to me, and I am delighted to find these trees and sketch them.
		This left an understory comprised of either native shrubs or regenerating native trees in the native vegetation of the highlands, or of lantana and other dense, exotic and noxious weeds in the disturbed vegetation of the lower elevations.
		Thanks to these efforts, Hakalau Reserve is slowly being revegetated with native trees, and down wood there is playing an important "nurse tree" role for tree regeneration, but much of the upper elevation forests of the Reserve may have been irreparably lost.

		Once nurse plants have become established, or where an existing kahikatea stand has been heavily grazed, shade-tolerant trees and shrubs can be planted among and beneath them.
		If you have a kahikatea stand that has been grazed and has no native understory plants, fence it, keep an eye on weeds and wait a couple of years to see if any native plants arrive on their own.
		You can speed things up by planting some of the shrubs and trees from the first and second list (nurse plants and sheltered areas) around the edge of the stand.

		It's only been here a week and when we got it I thought I was jumping the gun, but it's so cheerful and pretty and elegant in it's dark green velvety majesty, turning one end of my livingroom into the dark, mysterious winter forest.
		One ornament in particular that I love, and I might do a tree next year completely in thess ornaments alone -- is the tiny Dunkin Donuts white stryofoam coffee cups -- about 2 1/2 inches tall, suspended on a green ribbon, complete with the take-away lid on top.
		Well, I got my Christmas Tree up yesterday and beat my last year's tree trimming efforts by nearly two weeks.
