Karangahake Gorge is situated between the townships of Paeroa and Waihi, with access via State Highway 2.
The Victoria Battery was built at Waikino in 1897 to crush ore from the Waihi Martha mine.

Driving through the Karangahake Gorge, it is hard to comprehend just how much history is buried in the hills that canvas the area.
The Karangahake Gorge (which means "meeting of the hunchbacks") is a narrow, winding stretch of road on the Pacific Coast Highway situated halfway between Paeroa and Waihi.
The Gorge, and it's gold mining history remain one of Waihi's main tourist attractions since the tracks were opened as a walkway to the public, and after taking the time to discover what is here, it is little wonder why.

Situated between Paeroa and Waikino, access to the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is via State Highway 2.
From the other end, start at Karangahake beside the foundations of the Crown Battery, cross the river and go through the 1100m former rail tunnel, which is well lit.
At the western end they are centred round the confluence of the Waitawheta River at Karangahake, whereas the eastern approach is dominated by the site of the Waihi Gold Mining Company’s massive battery complex (1896-1952) at Waikino.

This gorge was the main route for the road and railway between Waikato and Bay of Plenty, running between the towns of Paeroa and Waihi until 1978.
At the western or Paeroa end of the gorge is the loop walk that includes the one kilometre tunnel.
A couple of hundred metres further, on your right, is the starting place for the loop walk, a parking area and toilets.

A quick geography lesson will tell you that this gorge is between the town of Paeroa and Waihi.
The Paeroa community website has a nice little potted history of the area, including the Karangahake gold-rush.
It’s a really pretty area to visit, and having walked about half of the heritage trail through the gorge a number of years ago, I can definitely recommend it.
