On October 1, 2005 the towns of Nasu and Karasuyama from Nasu District merged to form the new city of Nasukarasuyama.
On March 20, 2006, the city of Imaichi, the town of Ashio from Kamitsuga District, the town of Fujihara and the village of Kuriyama (both from Shioya District) merged with the old city of Nikko to form the new city of Nikko.
The city of Utsunomiya is scheduled to merge with the towns of Kamikawachi and Kawachi (both from Kawachi District) during March 2007.

A variety of devices are made for the stage background, called “Yama (mountain),” which changes its appearance following cues from the musical director, delighting the eye of the spectators.
This type of festival is without parallel in Japan, thus designated by the Japanese Government as a Significant Intangible Folk cultural Asset and by the Tochigi Prefectural Government as an Important Cultural Legacy.
The Karasuyama handmade Japanese paper is said to have started when the Nasu family invited papermakers from Echizen (the present Fukui Prefecture) to make the paper for the official letters of Nasu Government.

Late Miocene marine diatom biostratigraphy is established for the upper Arakawa Group distributed in eastern Tochigi Prefecture, central Japan.
The age of the upper Arakawa Group is estimated to be between 10.5 Ma and 9.2 Ma by combining data from diatom, radiolarian and nannofossil biostratigraphy, and a potassium-argon dating.
Paleobathymetric change is reconstructed for the upper Miocene sequence of the upper Arakawa Group distributed in eastern Tochigi Prefecture, central Japan, based on quantitative diatom analysis combined with analyses of benthic foraminifers and molluscs.

Combining the biostratigraphy with geochronology, we can refine the integrated time scale, which enable us to know the age of strata precisely.

The Karasuyama clan encouraged production of this kozo paper and, together with the nishinouchishi produced by the neighbouring Mito clan, it gained a high reputation.
