DSCH 19 Shostakovich CD Reviews - Karel Ancerl, Leningrad Symphony
Supraphon's previous CD issue of Karel Ancerl's legendary Leningrad (11 1952-2), available until recently, has been supplanted by the present remastering, part of the company's projected 42-album series, launched to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary this year of the conductor's death.
Otherwise, Ancerl does not make more of the symphony than is in the score, wisely choosing not to overfeed what is already on paper, after all, the most obese of Shostakovich's children.
Ancerl is at his most persuasive in the athletic final movement.

In the concertos Ancerl was following, discographically speaking, directly in Talich’s footsteps because the older man had recorded the Cello Concerto with Rostropovich in June 1952 and the Piano Concerto with Maxián in November 1951.
For this performance he is joined by Ancerl in Toronto, of which orchestra he was chief conductor followed his defection from Prague in 1968.
At the climax of the movement he and Ancerl engage in a deliberate retardation that sounds forced and surprisingly unnatural.

Tahra has kept Ancerl’s admirers on their toes for a number of years now and this 1995 triple CD box was a prestigious affair.
In the Op 72 set the magical ebullience of the Wellington performance can’t be replicated in the studio; that evening was punctuated by delighted applause and whilst Ancerl and the Berlin orchestra are committed and strongly athletic and bring gusto to the scores, once more a frisson is missing.
I don’t have Ancerl’s commercially issued Romeo and Juliet but Tahra’s notes aver that in their November 1961 performance in Leipzig he adds three scenes here that were omitted in the Supraphon disc.

But he was such a superb conductor of Czech music that it's hard to get too upset about the skewed repertoire, especially when we get magnificent performances of neglected music that deserves wider hearing, such as Otmar Mácha's Variations on a theme by and on the death of Jan Rychlik.
Ancerl's intensity and wide dynamics help Janácek's Taras Bulba make a stirring impression, with eloquent winds, brawny brass, and white-hot strings vividly captured in wide-ranging 1961 stereo sound.
The second disc focuses on Ancerl's international career, opening with Smetana's Vltava (The Moldau) in a Vienna performance that downplays its anthem-like aspects and stresses lyricism.

BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15; Tragic Overture, Op. 81 Erik Then-Bergh, piano/ Czech Philharmonic ...
The late Karel Ancerl (1908-1973) had been with the Czech Philharmonic eight years when he inscribed the Brahms D Minor Concerto 3-4 February 1958 with Hanover pianist Erik Then-Bergh (1916-1982).
Ancerl demarcates a noble and assertive Maestoso movement, clearly presenting the pesant five-note motif so that when it is recalled for the recapitulation in the strings under the piano, our sense of architecture is fulfilled.
Ancerl satisfies the composer's "penchant for melancholy" without exaggerating or distorting the musical lines, a performance of girth and force without tears.
