Karel Hynek Macha never created a representative figure which the Czech nation would accept as an example of typical or symbolic Czechness.
Macha has defined the ultimate achievement of Czech lyrical poetry - once and for all, his work is the most superior example of the genre.
It is one of the greatest mysteries of Macha and one of the greatest miracles of poetry as such that today, when we look at Macha through the prism of excellent and exhausting structuralist and phenomenological analysis, we must admit that all the 19th century findings about Macha were correct - or, almost correct.

On September 16, 1836, Karel Hynek Macha arrived in Litomerice, where he was thinking of settling for some years.
His very sudden and untimely death was connected to a fire in Litomerice, during the extinguishing of which he caught a chill and died as a result of it.
The cause of Macha's unexplained death remains vague, though it still seems unlikely that he died as a result of a chill he caught while fighting the fire.

In the last canto of the poem, Vilém´s predicament is assessed by the narrator, having visited the place of his execution several years later, first in winter, then in spring again.
This narrator, Hynek, is close to the author of the poem and identifies himself through his feelings with Vilém.
There are descriptions of places in the countryside (the lake, the place of execution) and of the prison cell at various parts of the day or night.

 Karel Hynek Macha | CESLIT
November was the anniversary of the birth (1810) and death (1836) of the great Czech romantic poet, Karel Hynek Macha.
Compared to Byron, Keats, Shelley, and Poe, called Lautreamont's "elder brother" by the Czech Surrealists, Karel Hynek Macha (1810-1836) was the greatest Czech Romantic poet, and arguably the most influential of any poet in the language.
Scorned at first by the national revivalists of the 19th century for being "un-Czech," he was held up as a "national" poet by later generations, a fate from which the interwar Czech avant-garde, who considered him a precursor, tried to rescue him.
