Together with many other Czechoslovak pilots, Kuttelwascher was able to make his way from Poland to France where he was drafted into the Foreign Legion to await the imminent outbreak of war.

Kuttelwascher však mínil v nočních akcích pokračovat i nadále.
Naproti tomu Kuttelwascher bojoval na jednomotorovém a jednomístném hurricanu, který pochopitelně žádný radar nést nemohl, a pilot tudíž musel spoléhat jen na své oči.

Kuttelwascher do Czech przyleciał na pokładzie Liberatora z 311 dywizjonu (Czesi zachowali swoje samoloty, na których latali w Anglii, były one potem przez wiele lat eksploatowane w Czechosłowacji) Parę tygodni później przybyła tam Ruby wraz z trójką dzieci, ale bardzo szybko wróciła do Anglii.
Karel zawsze był człowiekiem odważnym i nie krył się ze swoimi anty komunistycznymi poglądami.
Niestety życie rodzinne nie układało się dobrze, Ruby i Karel rozeszli się wkrótce.

By far the most successful of the RAF's night intruders was a Czech pilot with the unlikely name of Karel Kuttelwascher who flew all his successful intruder operations with the legendary No 1 Squadron [for more information on his exploits click here].
In the course of these three months, a total of about 140 night intruder operations were flown by a total of 19 pilots.
Karel Kuttelwascher - or Kut, as he was known - flew 15 trips during which he managed to shoot down no less than 15 enemy aircraft - three of them on one night - and damage another five.

 The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
For many years the aircraft appeared as ‘The Last of the Many' but eventually the inscription was removed and put on display in the BBMF headquarters.
PZ865 is currently painted to represent Hurricane IIc BE581, ‘ Night Reaper ', the aircraft flown by the Czech fighter ace Flt Lt Karel Kuttelwascher DFC* during night intruder operations from Tangmere in 1942 with the RAF's legendary N o 1(F) Squadron.
In only 15 night intruder missions ‘Kut', as he was know to his colleagues, shot down 15 enemy bombers (3 in one night on 5 May 1942) over their own airfields in France; he also damaged a further five bombers and shot up several steam locomotives and ‘E' boats.

Twenty years ago, I wrote the biography of Flight Lieutenant Karel Kuttelwascher, Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, who was the Royal Air Force’s most successful night intruder ace in World War Two.
He was a Czech who was my wife’s father and I called the book “Night Hawk” after his nickname in the wartime press.
There is a special 20-page pull-out on the Hurricane, which first flew 60 years ago this year, and seven of those pages are devoted to Karel Kuttelwascher.
