The chairman of the Karelo-Finnish Supreme Soviet (1940-1956) was Finnish communist Otto Ville Kuusinen.
The Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic (Karelo-Finnish S.S.R., Finnish Karjalais-Suomalainen sosialistinen neuvostotasavalta, Russian Карело-Финская Советская Социалистическая Республика or Karelo-Finskaya Sovietskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika) was a republic of the Soviet Union that existed between 1940 and 1956.
It became the Republic of Karelia, a subdivision of the Russian Federation, on November 13, 1991.

This republic existed until March 12, 1940, and was eventually incorporated into the Russian Karelo-Finnish SSR.
Finnish immigrants in the United States and Canada returned home, and many volunteers (one of them actor-to-be Christopher Lee) travelled to Finland to join Finland's forces: 1,010 Danes, 895 Norwegians, 372 Ingrians, 346 Finnish expatriates, and 210 volunteers of other nationalities made it to Finland before the war was over.
Finnish troops had only to take their own winter clothing in many instances and had spent most of their lives in the forest, as the vast majority of Finns were rural dwellers until the 1950's.

During the Finnish Civil War Vyborg was in the hands of the reds, until it was captured by the whites on 29 April 1918.
It was recaptured by Finnish troops during the Continuation War in 29 August 1941, and lost again on 20 June 1944.
The city is also known as Viipuri in Finnish, Viborg in Swedish and Wiburg in German.

Established as a Soviet Socialist Republic on February 25 1921, from March 12 1922 to December 5 1936 it was part of the Transcaucasian Federative Soviet Socialist Republic together with the Armenian SSR and the Azerbaijan SSR.

The initial discription of the blue in the first Estonian constitution specifically says that it should be the same blue as the Finnish Cross.

I enjoyed the Russian stations for reasons related to SWBC: Kaliningrad on 1386 kHz running Radio Nederland in English and Petrozavodsk on 1395 kHz, because it is located in what used to be the Karelo-Finnish SSR and is a NASWA country which is no longer found on the short-wave bands.
If I could only keep one DX memory, though, it would be of the local station on the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom.
