Davis fails to tell us why the world would be a better place if human lives were of no greater moral relevance than the lives of her chickens.
Davis suggests that animals have a "birthright in nature" to follow their own "projects" (such as having a "family life and the comfort it brings"), something that humans deprive them of.
Davis goes from an unwarranted assumption to a speculative mechanism involving a specific case (shouting, rough-handling, "imprisoned"): the author suggests the mechanism by which suffering might occur is like that of a mistreated human patient.

AR.net >> Karen Davis on Holocaust Comparisons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Karen Davis recently wrote a lengthy response to critics who complain about animal rights activists comparing the condition of animals slaughtered for food to the victims of the Holocaust.
Davis' claim that an animals inability to conceptualize any pain it feels might make that pain worse is odd given that conceptualization of pain is generally viewed as increasing the severity of the pain, and genocide, mass murder and ordinary every day murder has frequently incorporated said conceptualization to increase the horror of murder.
Davis also addressed the odd subject of "Who 'Owns' the Holocaust?" Here Davis suggests that the Jews -- oppressors of animals, after all -- may have improperly appropriated the term "Holocaust" for their own purposes.

In a thoughtful and thought-provoking contribution to the study of animals and the Holocaust, Karen Davis makes the case that significant parallels can—and must—be drawn between the Holocaust and the institutionalized abuse of billions of animals in factory farms.
Davis delves deeply into man's history of cruelty to animals under the guise of scapegoating and ritual sacrifice, and the reader may conclude that today's meat industry is little more than an ongoing mass slaughter-ritual updated to the age of the machine.
As for relative sufferings and their hierarchy of importance, Davis tackles the penultimate emblem of mass suffering, the Holocaust, and compares it successfully with the daily slaughter of millions of sentient beings in the name of human gluttony and imperialistic perfidy.
