They sing the Karen national anthem, say a prayer and file onto a narrow path leading to the thick jungle beyond base camp.
And it was their stories of the Karen resistance that brought a former soldier in the New Zealand army to fight with the KNU.

When the Constitution of the Union of Burma was drafted, the leaders and representatives of non-Burman ethnic nationals had lack in constitutional issues as well as overly trusted on General Aung San so that without constitutional debate, the 1947 Constitution of the Union of Burma was adopted at the Constituent Assembly on September 24, 1947.

Karens on the 56th Anniversary of KNU Day
Hand in hand with fellow oppressed nationalities and the democratic forces, we, the KNU, will struggle on until this evil system is dismantled and a democratic federal union is established.
Like other oppressed fellow nationalities, the Karen people are deprived of the rights to freedom, justice and security.
The purpose of the unification was to give a concerted leadership to the Karen people and to gain the right yearned for by the Karen people to decide their own political destiny.

The reckless operations of the God’s Army, which was allegedly led by mystically-inspired Karen teenage twins, proved to be a propaganda coup for the perpetually embarrassed SPDC, a tasty tidbit for the international news media, and an excuse for the Thai government to further estrange its former Karen ally.
While thousands of Karen were enduring unspeakable abuses at the hands of the Burmese Army, the news media tended to focus on the eccentricities of the God’s Army, including its use of boy soldiers.

From Political Aspiration to National Consensus
It is now time for the Karens from all walks of life throughout Burma to congregate in a national meeting that will enable them to explore peaceful and lasting solutions to the problems that have plagued them as the largest ethnic nationalities group, the union and Burma generally.
The Karens need a leadership that is not only committed to the Karen's collective vision of self-determination within a genuine union of Burma, but that is also skillful and inventive in policy making, intellectually and strategically flexible, and capable of adapting to and taking advantage of, new developments in Burma, the region and the world.
While the KNU is the only organization that has been leading the armed resistance, it is recognized that several Karen groups and individuals have emerged lately and played their role throughout these years for the survival and development of our people.

The National Convention’s delegates are handpicked by the SPDC, and the whole event is a stage-managed re-run of the failed National Convention that collapsed in 1996.
This National Convention has been described as a sham by human rights organizations, Burmese pro-democracy and most ethnic national groups, and democratic governments around the world, because it is proceeding without the participation of the main pro-democracy party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), and most ethnic national groups.
There are several indigenous ethnic national organisations which go cross-border to distribute humanitarian aid to the IDPs in the jungles of eastern Burma, and they provide a high standard of accountability and transparency to donors, with regular written reports, accounts of use of funds, video and photographic documentation.

Recent indications are that the Karen continue their opposition to an agreement, adhering to the principled argument that a truce with SLORC must include a nationwide ceasefire and that talks must be held on neutral territory.
