SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Features -- 'Karen Sisco' thin on action
Now played by Carla Gugino, Karen Sisco, a U.S. marshal based in Miami, began her life as a character in an Elmore Leonard novel.
Tonight, Sisco has just two things to do – remember what happened in a shootout where she was almost mortally wounded, and decide if her studly new boyfriend (Patrick Dempsey) is a bank robber, or just misunderstood.
Sisco arrives this season as part of a mini-trend of female crime-busters on the small screen, including ABC's "Alias" and "Cold Case" on CBS.

 Floridian: Take 2, 'Karen Sisco'
Karen Sisco is one of five prime-time TV shows this fall set in Miami.
Like Sisco, who is drawn as a streetwise combination of guts, brains and beauty, Gugino is a sharp professional who knows that much of today's success is riding on her good attitude and passion for perfection.
Still, the rise of shows such as Sisco and CSI: Miami, in which the city's ambience is used almost as another character onscreen, ups the ante for TV producers seeking a setting couch potatoes haven't seen a thousand times before.

One of the pluses of "Karen Sisco" is that, true to Leonard's fiction, the fugitives Karen tracks are more than generic baddies.
In tonight's less compelling hour, Karen realizes she may be sleeping with the enemy, a charter-boat owner played by Patrick Dempsey.
"Karen Sisco" is primarily about the ongoing spectacle of Karen's high-heeled bravado, but its crimes of the week are also rich in character.

Character-driven 'Karen Sisco' is an all-around winner
"Karen Sisco's" spark is in the interplay between police procedure and hard-boiled romance.

The unlikable Sisco kin don't help either, as her father plays an equally cold cop and her boyfriend -- a married man -- fails to inspire any warmth for either his or her character.
