Balzer's world record of 12.9sec set in September 1969 was reduced to 12.8sec by Teresa Sukniewicz (Poland) in June 1970.
This was Balzer's fifth straight hurdles victories in the European Indoor Championships, held over 50m in 1967, '68 and '69, and over 60m in 1970 and '71.
Balzer's last major international competition was at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972, where she won the bronze medal behind Ehrhardt.

Karin Balzer (born June 5, 1938) is a former (A native or inhabitant of the former republic of East Germany) East German (An athlete who runs the hurdles) hurdler, one of the best in high hurdles event during the 1960s.
She was born Karin Richert in (Click link for more info and facts about Magdeburg) Magdeburg, and competed in several (Participating in athletic sports performed on a running track or on the field associated with it) track and field events when she was young.
At the time, the team was still made up from athletes of both East and (A republic in north central Europe on the North Sea; established in 1949 from the zones of Germany occupied by the British and French and Americans after the German defeat; reunified with East Germany in 1990) West Germany.

Although she was most famous as a champion hurdler, Karin Balzer was also an accomplished all-round athlete, having won, besides seven East German hurdles titles, two national pentathlon titles, a long jump title, and a 200m title during her career.
Competing under her maiden name of Richert, Karin's first major international competition was the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where she finished fourth in her semi-final of the 80m hurdles, just missing the final.
By the end of 1962, Karin had risen to world class in both the 80m hurdles, in which she ranked equal second that year, and the pentathlon, where she ranked eighth.
