Karin Smith died on March 8, 1995, of cervical cancer.
After her death, a grand jury found a doctor and laboratory technician to be guilty of negligent homicide.
In 1988 and 1999, Smith had received pap smears which were argued to have "unequivocally" shown that she had cancer; however, the lab had not made the diagnosis.

Smith filed yet another grievance alleging her supervisor violated the confidentiality of the grievance process by circulating her letter of reprimand to three employees of Bates.
Smith ultimately sued Bates, the college district of which it is a part, and four supervisory personnel, seeking monetary damages for wrongful discharge in violation of public policy, defamation, and violation of her First Amendment rights pursuant to 42 U.S.C. Bates moved for summary judgment on all the claims.

I hit 35 weeks and had a "funky" (as my OB called it..) non-stress test and they decided to look further and found that the baby's amniotic fluid levels were low and that her (yes, HER!) abdomen had quit growing at about 33 weeks.
They decided not to risk anything so I was induced the evening of December 7th, 2001 and Amelia Jane Adair Smith arrived at 10:41 a.m.
She spent 24 hours in the NICU at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago and then was in the special care nursery for 7 days.
