| | East Otago |
 | | This picturesque town, set close to one of the safest and most scenic beaches in the country, was originally intended to be Otago’s major settlement, unfortunately and perhaps unwisely, displaced from that honour by Dunedin. |
 | | For those with a liking for the seaside, Waikouaiti and Karitane offer boating off the beach or through the estuary, offshore fishing, surf-casting, playing in the surf, or just plain lazing in the sun on the sand. |
 | | The view from the lookout above Karitane, taking in Karitane and Waikouaiti bays, where much of Otago’s history began, is a delight, and is well worthy of a detour off the main highway. |
