Karl Berger completes Maine Coast seminar at Chewonki
Karl Berger of Boothbay completed the fall semester of his junior year enrolled in the Maine Coast Seminar at Chewonki in Wiscasset.
Farm chores began at 6-6:15 (Berger's chores were on the farm for most of the time) included milking the cows, feeding the chickens, pigs and sheep, feeding and brushing the horses, mucking the stalls and sweeping the barn, etc. Some students also were part of the processing of the birds on campus.
Berger said they were all told, upon arrival, that they would run out of time for homework; that they would have to make their own time.

EMANEM 4037: KARL BERGER & EDWARD BLACKWELL
Berger also utilises an African xylophone and a darbuka and at points it sound like some of the areas that William Parker and Hamid Drake set out to explore on their duo album on Aum Fidelity, as wood and metal thump and kling-klang together.
Karl Berger is a master of the vibraphone, but he also touches balafon (an African xylophone) and darbuka on this recording.
Berger's since established himself as a string arranger; this might help to explain the rightness of his unerringly placed mallet beats, and also why the finely detailed melodies he brings to this performance so generously award attention.

Karl Berger’s playing in the mid-70’s draws the conclusion that his was one of the more original voices at a time when jazz was begging for something fresh.
His phrasing is certainly of that school that grew tired of the old, predictable methods that could be developed not much further than the three or four chords that were the derivative structure of most compositions of the period.
Karl was one of the many who would seek to advance than to lie dormant in a creative sleep, a trait most evident in his composing.

Berger's compositions are brief, song-like free-bop heads in the manner of Ornette, with free/modal solo sections sandwiched in between the theme statements.
Like Coleman, Berger is not as radical in the hearing as one might expect; both their musics are based on the core elements of swing and coherent melody.
Berger also participated in percussion festivals in New Delhi and Bombay, and served as a pianist in a duo with the African percussionist Baba Olatunji.

Karl Berger - About   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The thing that struck me as unusual about Karl Berger when I first heard him playing at the Mercer Arts Center in the early 1970s was how much at home he sounded with some of the best young players in the New York jazz scene.
Strongly influenced by Monk and Ornette, Karl Berger created a sound of his own, at once airy and precise, harmonically advanced yet anchored in a destinctive hard swing.
He has the magical quality of being penetrating and clear at the same time tures are a constant suprise: the slightest touch of a cymbal beginning the title tune, or, later in the same piece, a contrapuntal guitar-bass duet in which the leads swings back and forth between the two.
