Karl Straub is a D.C. area songwriter whose material has been covered by numerous artists, including Last Train Home, Mary Battiata and Little Pink, the Grandsons, Mark Noone,Virginia Coalition, Kevin Johnson, Lisa Moscatiello, the Kennedys, Cowlick Lucy, Eugene Chadbourne, and Lee Wilhoit.
His best-known songs are often witty novelties like "Backwards Town" and "Don't Take Advice," prompting his mother's complaint that she "couldn't hear the words because people were laughing so loud." Straub's humor is definitely not from the smirky smartass school, however.

Karl Theodore Francis Bitter (1867-1915) was born in Vienna, Austria.
Bitter, of Viennese birth, had been in America for only ten years, but had already enjoyed major success with crucial artistic projects: he had provided sculptural enhancements for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and had designed decorations for the Administration Building at the Chicago's World's Fair.
Bitter envisioned a profusion of statuary and fountains decorating the grounds, illustrating in allegory the Progress of man. The concept not only supported but extended the principal theme of the Exposition: "To celebrated the achievements of civilization during 100 years of development in the western hemisphere"

In choosing the Plaza, Pulitzer threw down one last challenge to his bitter rival, William Randolph Hearst, who'd just erected the unfortunate Maine Memorial on Columbus Circle...He asked that his fountain resemble those on the Place de la Concorde.
It is called the Fountain of Abundance, and shows Pomona, protectress of fruit trees and therefore identified as Goddess of Abundance, atop a fountain of five concentric rings of Hautville stone.
The day Bitter finished the clay model for the sculpture; he was run over and killed by a car in New York, giving his assistant the task of completing the fountain.

When newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer died in 1911, he bequeathed $50,000 "for the erection of a fountain like those in the Place de la Concorde, Paris, France." Pulitzer probably got the idea to locate the fountain in Grand Army Plaza from Karl Bitter, the Austrian sculptor, who proposed a symmetrical plaza for this area.
After a closed design competition it was not surprising that Bitter and the architect Thomas Hastings were commissioned to create the fountain.
To make the plaza symmetrical, the Sherman monument was moved 16 feet west to its present location.
