Karl Pavlovich Briullov (Карл Павлович Брюллов), called by his friends the Great Karl (December 12, 1799, St Petersburg - June 11, 1852, Rome), was the first Russian painter of international standing.
Despite his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1809-1821) Briullov never fully embraced the Classical style taught by his mentors and promoted by his own brother, Alexander Brullov.
Following advice of his doctors, Briullov left Russia for Madeira in 1849 and spent the last three years of his life in Italy.
Karl Brulloff (Brullo until 1822, when the family name was changed according to Russian pronunciation) was born in 1799 in St. Petersburg into the family of painters: his great grand-father, his grand-father, his father and his two elder brothers Fedor and Alexander were artists.
In 1809-1821, Karl studied art in the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.
One of his early notable pictures Narcissus (1819), created while studying in the Academy, was implemented in the principles of Classicism, which he was taught.

When Briullov was born in 1799, the Neoclassical style in Russia was still dominant, but the period of its greatest productivity and popularity was over.
Perhaps this influenced Briullov's early distaste for the return to classicism; at any rate, despite his education at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1809-1821), Briullov never fully embraced the style taught by the Academy.
Although by today's standards we may find the painting somewhat theatrical and lacking in life, it is certainly an important achievement for an artist in the early nineteenth century, and a significant step in the development of historical painting in Russia.
Widely considered the first Russian artist to truly achieve international recognition, Karl Pavlovich Briullov largely abandoned the Neoclassical style into which he was born in 1799, and his innovations eased the transition into the Romantic period.
Briullov spent nearly three years there preparing The Last Day of Pompeii, painstakingly reconstructing the scene from artifacts discovered during the ongoing excavation of the ancient city's ruins.
Although he was hailed a master upon his return to Russia in 1841, Briullov was never again able to produce a work of such scale or depth.

KarlBriullovs portrait of his intimate friend Countess Julia Samoilova is perhaps the artists most important work in a museum outside Russia.
Painted shortly after his monumental Last Day of Pompeii (1832; State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg), the portrait marked the pinnacle of Briullovs long sojourn in Italy and endured as one of the many tributes he painted to the beauty and friendship of the countess.
To Briullov, she epitomized femininity and beauty, and he portrayed her in a scene of joyful welcome and fashionable elegance.
