  Karl Cardinal Lehmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Karl Cardinal Lehmann (born May 16, 1936 in Sigmaringen) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Bishop of Mainz and Chairman of the Conference of the German Bishops (German: Deutsche Bischofskonferenz) and thus the highest representative of the Catholic Church in Germany.
After school, Karl Lehmann studied philosophy and theology at the Albert Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg and the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome, a famous seminary.
He was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI.

Cardinal Karl Lehmann of Mainz, chair of the German bishops' conference, said in his closing homily June 20 he was convinced that the assembly "has given many people a sense of direction and encouragement." He spoke of Catholics continuing to grow "together with our Protestant and Orthodox brothers and sisters in faith."
A highlight of the assembly was a June 19 discussion between Cardinal Lehmann and Father Hans Kung, a dissident Swiss theologian whose right to teach at a Catholic university was withdrawn by the Vatican in 1979.
Cardinal Lehmann said the assembly had been "pious in its own way." He noted that services were well-attended and said he had experienced many thoughtful, serious discussions.

The controversy over a ban on religious symbols in schools which began in France last year has now spread to Germany.
German Cardinal Karl Lehmann criticized the president this week, and insisted he was wrong to compare Islamic veils and headscarves with Christian symbols.
Cardinal Lehmann said the Muslim veil was a symbol of discrimination while Christian crosses and religious clothing were without the "slightest trace of political propaganda about them".
