Karl Dönitz joined the German submarine fleet in December 1916 after serving as navy lieutenant during World War I. He was captivated by the British forces and returned to Germany in 1920.
30 Apr 1945, the office of Reichspräsident passed to Karl Dönitz according to the Political Testament of Adolf Hitler, Part 2, dated 04:00 29 Apr 1945 (effective with Hitler's death 30 Apr 1945) [1]
Dönitz continued his career as navy officer and became the captain of the Emden cruiser in 1934.
