 Karl Davidov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Karl Davidov (1838-1889) was a Russian cellist of great renown during his time, and described as the "tsar of cellists" by Tchaikovsky.
Viktor Burenin wrote a libretto for this purpose in 1880, but when Davidov proved unable to find the time to compose, Burenin offered to libretto to Tchaikovsky.
Note: Despite his links with Tchaikovsky, Karl Davidov was unrelated to that part of the Davidov clan into which Tchaikovsky's sister Alexandra and the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov married.

In 1964 the "Davidov" Cello was purchased for $90,000 by Ismena Holland who then gave the cello to her goddaughter, the English cellist (Click link for more info and facts about Jacqueline du Pré) Jacqueline du Pré.
Upon receiving the Davidov, Du Pre's teacher at the time, William Pleeth, declared it as "one of the really great instruments of the world." Just about all of du Pré's recordings from 1964 to 1970 were made on this instrument.

Davidov was a child prodigy, but his parents insisted that he complete his education before embarking on a career as a cellist.
At that point in his life, Davidov's intention was to be a composer, however, after filling in for Grutzmacher on short notice, and being very well received as a cellist, he followed that path instead.
Davidov was of the opinion that cellists should learn from the technique of violinists, and advised his students to observe the best violinists carefully.

In 1964 the "Davidov" Cello was purchased for $90,000 by Ismena Holland who then gave the cello to her goddaughter, the English cellist Jacqueline du Pré.
By 1970 though, du Pré had begun to tire of the instrument's somewhat fickle nature, and switched to a Peresson cello bought for her by her husband Daniel Barenboim, which she mainly played on for the remainder of her career.

Karl Davidov was an important Russian cellist of the nineteenth century.
Karl began piano lessons at the age of five, and took up the cello at twelve, with Heinrich Schmidt, principal cellist at the Moscow Theatre.
In 1876 Tchaikovsky and Davidov were both candidates for the post of Director at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and it was Davidov who was awarded the position.

In 1870, it was given to Karl Davidov (1838-1889) by a wealthy patron, and it is his name that it bears today.
After Davidov's death in 1889, the cello was sold in Paris, then in 1928 to an American business executive, and finally in 1964 to Ismena Holland.
Upon her death in 1987, du Pré left the Davidov to Ma, who currently performs with it in Baroque music.
