 Karl Edward Wagner - SCIFIPEDIA
Wagner openly admired the exploits and intrigues of barbarian character Conan, created by Robert Ervin Howard, and he edited three definitive volumes of Howard’s Conan stories: The Hour of the Dragon (1977), The People of the Black Circle (1977) and Red Nails(1977).
Wagner also added his own contribution to the series of pastiches he mostly despised with an exceptional Conan novel, The Road of Kings (1979).
Wagner’s finest short story, the British Fantasy Award-winning “Sticks” (1974), was inspired by the artwork of Lee Brown Coye (1907-81) and was twice adapted for audio (in 1984 and 1998).

Karl Edward Wagner was one of the great modern masters of the horror novelette & novella, bringing to graphic horror a psychological complexity & reasonableness perhaps inevitable for someone trained in psychiatry.
I did not always understand Karl nor he I; his response to a minor exploit of mine was not what I expected, perhaps because I attempted to relate more to the Hell's Angel exterior than to the physician interior.
Karl was not able to be stern with Fritz who was after all a deity nearing the end of his time among mortals.

Wagner did a god job with describing the events in great detail, and the only flaw that I could find (granted, a rather large one), is the inconsistency with the protagonists character.
Karl Edward Wagner has created a character of striking contrasts in a world of medieval beauty and gothic horror.
Wagner's writing is so powerful that you are drawn into Kane's world so deeply that it seems you are on the battlefield in a mystical realm in a time before time...He's my favorite anti-hero.

Bloodstained Memories - Karl Edward Wagner
My only regret is that Wagner didn't see fit to enlighten us as to why the Lartroxian Combine "thirsted for Kane's blood".
Karl Edward Wagner died in October of 1994, so it is pretty doubtful we will see anymore tales of Kane.
It seems a shame, because this is one character that really speaks to me. And while Kane might not have the universal appeal of a Conan, to me he is a towering giant in the field of Heroic Fantasy.

Karl Edward Wagner (4 December 1945 – 13 October 1994) was an American writer of horror, science fiction, and heroic fantasy, who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and originally trained as a psychiatrist.
Wagner also created his own mystical and pre-historical hero, Kane, whose name and background are based on traditional conceptions of the biblical Cain.
A powerful, left-handed man with red hair and eyes which people find it difficult to meet (the Mark of Kane), the character was described by Wagner as one "who could master any situation intellectually, or rip heads off if push came to shove".

Wagner's immortal character may have swung a wicked blade, but he was pure Gothic and echoed C.R. Maturin's doomed Melmoth the Wanderer.

As most of Wagner's books are currently out of print, obtaining this collection is the easiest way for readers to become exposed to Karl's works.
Included in this collection: The very first story Karl ever wrote; Short stories involving the mythical warrior Kane (set in both the past and present!); Adventures of his Western hero Becker; An invaluable bibliography for Wagner collectors; And of course his popular "horror" stories, which brought Wagner some well deserved critical acclaim.
It does, however, provide a wide range of enjoyable stories, and for those who mourn the loss of one of the most creative imaginations of our generation, this is a fitting denouement.

SF REVIEWS.NET: Killer / David Drake & Karl Edward Wagner
What is there to say about a book with dialogue like "Do you see any sign of his lungs?" Not a whole lot, really, other than that line ought to tell you right off the bat if this is the book for you...or not.
It is probably the sort of thing one ought to expect when combining Drake's fondness for ancient history and military action with the late Wagner's horror influence; Wagner was better known in his lifetime for the horror anthologies he edited than for his own stories.
Drake and Wagner do a good job setting up a few scares, but most frequently they settle for letting the viscera flow.
