Prince Karl I. Karl is the first ancestor and originator of the Liechtenstein House.
After the battle from Weißen Berg, Karl of Liechtenstein was appointed as ordinary proconsul and vice-regent of Bohemia in 1622 and as first member of the House he was bestowed with the order of the Golden Fleece.
After Karl's death (1627), the provisions stipulated with the occasion of the hereditary accord with the brothers Maximilian and Gundaker regarding the family estate and the succession came into effect.

In the tradition of the Kunstkammer of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, Prince Karl I of Liechtenstein also began to systematically collect valuable art objects.
At the beginning of the last century, central Liechtenstein archives were established in Vienna on the instructions of Prince Johann II.
All the materials dating back to before 1858 which had previously been kept by local estate offices or central authorities, and had hence been virtually inaccessible to historians, were brought together, inspected and indexed, and have since been professionally maintained.

 The Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna's newest temple of the arts
On 28 March 2004, the Liechtenstein Museum in the Liechtenstein garden palace opened its doors to present selected masterpieces from the Princely Collections in Vaduz, one of the most beautiful and important private collections in the world.
The highlight of decorative artwork in the Liechtenstein garden palace is the monumental ceiling fresco in the Hercules Hall, begun in 1704, by Andrea Pozzo, the great master of Roman Baroque.
This library was to be transferred to the Liechtenstein garden palace in the early 20th century.

Palais Liechtenstein is home to the Prince of Liechtenstein's fabulous private art collection, an accumulation so vast only a tenth of it is on display.
Prince Karl I of Liechtenstein began collecting art back in the 17th century, and each of his descendents added to the family treasure trove.
While this was built up on the then-outskirts of the city, a mere "summer palace" was not grand enough for Prince Johann Adam Andreas I, who had already erected five other Liechtenstein palaces, including his family's gigantic Viennese "winter palace" on the Bankgasse.

1748], Vienna;[5] Reigning Princes of Liechtenstein; Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein, Vienna, until 1945, afterward Vaduz, Principality of Liechtenstein; sold 1962 through (Marianne Feilchenfeldt, Zurich) to NGA.
In 1733 Prince Josef Wenzel applied seals bearing the arms of Liechtenstein and the date 1733 to all paintings that were part of the "Fideikomissgalerie." In effect this commemorates the heritage of Prince Johann Adam and separated the works from Prince Josef Wenzel's own collection.
Information on this aspect of the provenance given by Dr. Reinhold Baumstark, Director of Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein, in letters of 28 June 1982 and 28 May 1985 in the NGA curatorial files.
