The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace Review
This composition is one of Jenkins' most thematic undertakings, a courageous examination of war and peace expressed in bold musical compositions.
Jenkins has taken the listener through a broad range of emotions and has not shunned the more horrific aspects of war and suffering - all the better to make the argument against it.
It is also clear that Jenkins meant for this song cycle to be experienced as a whole: the composition and execution of these songs creates a wonderful overall experience, yet it is difficult to separate out a song and have it stand on its own.

 ITV - Karl Jenkins
Its success in the classical charts alongside his earlier choral work, The Armed Man, has confirmed Jenkins’ enormous popularity and furthered his reputation as a composer to be reckoned with - he is the only living composer in the top 10 Classic FM Hall of Fame.
Jenkins father, a school teacher, introduced him to the piano when he was just 6 years old, setting him on his musical path.
Although dismissed by one or two commentators, his music is acclaimed by most and Jenkins believes his broad range of musical experiences has given his music a special inclusiveness that reaches out to audiences the world over.

 Karl Jenkins: Adiemus
Karl Jenkins' music explores and fuses different music styles and cultures -- Adiemus uses influences from Celtic, African and Arabic music, and rock too, of course -- but his return to the semi-classical fold is actually quite recent.
Karl Jenkins had other solutions, one of which was to occasionally give Miriam Stockley a break and use another white South-African singer, Mary Carewe.
Karl Jenkins has been quoted as saying that, though little music of consequence is written today, at least pop music has done something new with creating new sonic textures.

Amazon.co.uk: Jenkins: The Armed Man - A Mass For Peace: Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is a departure from his Adiemus recordings into the more conventional territory of large-scale choral and orchestral writing, though his customary passion for mixing languages remains in full force with texts in English, Latin and French.
Jenkins has said that The Armed Man was inspired by the "L'Homme armé" masses which were popular in the 16th century, and he makes this debt clear with passages written in a neat pastiche of Palestrina-style renaissance polyphony.
I appreciate that Jenkins is reflecting upon the many aspects not only of war but of its roots, and individually each piece is very good, but they just dont go together as well as I would hope.but somehow I feel it lacks cohesion.

UKMIX - Reviews - Karl Jenkins - Requiem
There comes a time in every composer's career when they realise that they are sufficiently famous that people might be considering mourning their death, and they need to write a requiem mass to honour that.
Jenkins is probably best known for the writing and conducting with the choir Adiemus, and so upon first listening to this CD, you expect to be greeted with classical music that borders firmly on chill-out/new-age — easy to drift away to and lacking in any genuine words.
However, this would all be far too conventional for Jenkins, so he has included some more Adiemus-esque moments in the piece, in the shape of a selection of traditional Japanese haikus set in a much calmer tone to contrast with the Latin pieces.

Jenkins' ground breaking ways to merge his style with a requiem is superb, this is particularly illustrated in track 2: Dies Irae, which has and I quote, 'a hip-hop rhythm.'

Jenkins' latest CD The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is unmistakably classical.
The title is a giveaway as the tradition of writing masses based on the French song L'Homme Arme dates back over five centuries and his modern update is the result of a millennium commission to mark the passing of "the most war-torn and destructive century in human history".
Karl Jenkins is one of the UK's most successful composers and Mass For Peace is a typically rich recording, continuing in the centuries old tradition of Armed Man masses.

'Requiem : In These Horizons Stones Sing', Karl Jenkins' stunning new work which draws on Western and Oriental traditions, is a mass for the souls of the dead set to texts from the Christian Mass (in Latin), using the familiar Dies Irae, Pie jesu and Lacrimosa plus Japanese jisei.
The work is performed by a chamber orchestra, two choirs (successful amateur Welsh choirs), soprano soloist, incidental harp, percussion and shakuhachi (Japanese flute), incorporating a Western melodic style with ethnic and world music elements — the trademark of Karl Jenkins.
The album finishes with an additional track - Bryn Terfel singing 'In These Horizons Stones Sing' which was premiered at the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff in November for which it was commissioned.

The strings continued to impress in the highly stylised three-movement Palladio.
The Mass for Peace saw five local choirs joined on stage by a full symphony orchestra, soprano Ailish Tynan and Jenkins himself.
By setting elements of the Christian mass alongside Muslim and Hindu religious references, as well as Japanese poetry, Jenkins clearly intended this piece to reflect the realities of war and peace in a multicultural society - a very apt sentiment on what was the anniversary of 9/11.
