Karl Kling was one of Mercedes-Benz's best known drivers in the early 1950s but his career suffered when the company withdrew from the sport after the Le Mans disaster in 1955.
Kling joined Daimler-Benz as a reception clerk in the public relations department in 1936.
Kling stayed with the team in 1955 but on June 11 that year Pierre Levegh's Mercedes-Benz crashed into the back of the Austin Healey of Lance Macklin and was launched into the air.

Stuttgart, Germany-- Karl Kling, a former member of the Mercedes racing team, was one of the great driver personalities of the glorious Silver Arrow era after the Second World War.
Kling's golden period began in 1952, when he enjoyed outstanding success in international circuit and long-distance races at the wheel of the new Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing prototype.
When Daimler-Benz returned to Grand Prix racing in 1954 with their new W 196 Formula One car, Karl Kling was once again in on the act - first lining up alongside teammates Juan Manuel Fangio, Hermann Lang and Hans Herrmann, and later with such top drivers as the Englishman Stirling Moss and Piero Taruffi.

 Hans Klenk - Biography
This coincided with the introduction of the famous gullwing 300SL model, and Klenk was teamed up with Kling for several endurance races that year.
Kling and Klenk led at half-distance, but after hitting a stone and being delayed when they could not get the wheel off to replace it, they eventually had to settle for second behind the Ferrari of Giovanni Bracco and Alfonso Rolfo.
Kling bravely held on until the next refuelling stop, where the windscreen was repaired and the interior cleaned up, but apparently the stench lasted for some time!

The driver of the third 300 SL – the young American John Fitch – had already arrived in Mexico to welcome the rest of the Mercedes party.
Fitch was to tackle the race in an open-top roadster variant – in contrast to the coupés of Kling and Lang – and he later expressed his delight on coming face-to-face with the 300 SL for the first time: ”This was one hell of a racing car!

The 300SLs made their racing debuts at the 1952 Mille Miglia, with Karl Kling, Hermann Lang and Rudy Caracciola, with Kling finishing second, Caracciola fourth and Lang retiring due to damaged rear suspension.
The magic season was finished in November at the Carrera Panamericana, a 2,000-mile, five-day speed extravaganza where the factory team fielded both coupes and roadsters, with Kling/Klenk, Lang/Grupp and American John Fitch with navigator Eugen Geiger.
He showed Kling's Bern-winning car at car shows and sports car races during 1953, and gave the production 300SL and the smaller 220-based 190SL their world premieres in New York City in February, 1954.

The factory agreed and brought a trio of cars and drivers Hermann Lang, and Karl Kling, two coupes for the Germans and a new and untried roadster for John Fitch.
Fitch's roadster kept throwing the treads off its Continental tires and experienced a high-speed blowout that took out one of the shock absorber mounts and misaligned the front suspension.
The next day, the Mercedes-Benz rookie driver finished fourth overall, while Kling and Lang finished first and second, putting Mercedes-Benz squarely back on the racing map in North America.
