The German bishops hardly had time to express their disappointment that Karl Lehmann, the president of the German Catholic bishops’ conference, had once again been passed over before he was indeed given the red hat a week later.
Lehmann himself was astounded when the nuncio’s phone call came through on the Friday telling him to prepare himself for the appointment on Sunday.
In the one practice is at stake, in the other principle, but in both Lehmann and Kasper seek to curb Roman centralism in favour of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council on the independence of the episcopal office.

VATICAN, Feb. 22, 01 (CWNews.com) – Cardinal Karl Lehmann, whose elevation to the College of Cardinals was the most surprising note of the February 2001 consistory, told reporters that he did not regret his opposition to the Holy See on the question of abortion counseling in Germany.

Finally, Cardinal Lehmann rejected the notion that there is some tension between him and his fellow German prelate, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (bio - news), the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Cardinals with No faith: Walter Cardinal Kasper and Karl Cardinal Lehmann
Looking forward to Catholics allowing themselves to be instructed by Protestants, Lehmann rejoices that "in reality, the exegetical praxis of both Churches have become largely similar." And for him it is of little importance that the "Catholic" exegetes have aligned themselves with the Protestants, and not vice-versa.
Karl Lehmann not only unites himself to "the separated brethren" in exalting Luther, but he also unites himself to them in the denigration of the Catholic Church, her doctrine and her "very often unenlightened practices"
If such is Rasper's and Lehmann's faith, it is not difficult to intuit what has become of morality in their hands: abortion, divorce, contraception, abolition of priestly celibacy, etc.

Cardinal Lehmann alluded to the work carried out by Cardinal Ratzinger as prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: "He has fulfilled one of the most delicate tasks, namely, to maintain the essence of the Catholic faith intact amid all the spiritual, social and theological changes."

These efforts are expected to include allowing priests to perform burials in non-ecclesiastical robes, in the hope that even people who consider themselves non-religious will decide to have Christian burials.
