Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg - Westpomerania) is a state in northeastern Germany, bounded on the north by the Baltic Sea (Ostsee), on the west by Schleswig - Holstein, on the southwest by Lower Saxony, on the south by Brandenburg, and on the east by Poland.
Mecklenburg-Schwerin consisted of: The Duchy of Schwerin, The Principality of Schwerin, The Wenden District of the Duchy of Güstrow, The Lordship of Wismar (Wismar and the surrounding area were under the rule of Sweden from 1648 to 1803), Rostock District, and The Domain of Scattered Convents.
From 1759 to 1764 all of Mecklenburg was occupied by Prussia.

Westphalia, Wismar and some other parts of Mecklenburg were surrendered to Sweden, the recompense assigned to the duchies.
There then remained only the line ruling in Mecklenburg proper, and the princes of this family, in addition to inheriting the lands of their dead kinsmen, made many additions to their territory, including the counties of Schwerin and of Strelitz.

Erzherzog Karl Albrecht Nikolaus Leo Gratianus was born on the 18th of December 1888 at Pola as the eldest son of Admiral Erzherzog Karl Stephan and Erzherzogin Maria Theresia.
On the 27th of April 1912 Erzherzog Karl Albrecht received the grand cross of the Bulgarian Order of Cyrill and Methodius and was transferred to the reitende Artillerie Division (Mounted Artillery Detachment) number 2 on the 23rd of September 1912.
Erzherzog Karl Albrecht was now attached to the General staff performing duty at the Landesverteidigungskommando in Tyrol shortly followed by his promotion to Hauptmann on the 1st of March 1915.

Before the German conquest 1160 was Mecklenburg inhabited by Slavic tribes, the most important of these were the Obodrites, but thereafter were the Slavs gradually assimilated by the German settlers that arrived in large numbers.
It had been the Saxon duke Heinrich the Lion that had conquered Mecklenburg and he installed a descendent of the Obodrites princes (Pribislaw) as his vassal.
After having been under Danish supremacy 1200-1227 was Mecklenburg once again German, but the overlordship of it was claimed by both Saxony and Brandenburg until the Mecklenburg princes were elevated to dukes 1348 whereby Mecklenburg became subordinated only to the German Emperor.

After the sonless deaths of his great-uncle duke Adolf Frederick of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (d 1969) and his only brother duke Christian Ludwig of Mecklenburg (d 1996), the childless hereditary grand duke Frederick Francis V confirmed the Count of Carlow 's (d 1962) male-line descendants as dynasts of Mecklenburg with rights to succession in Meclenburg states.
The count of Carlow himself had been adopted by his uncle, duke Charles Michael of Mecklenburg, and thus already became known as Duke George of Mecklenburg (the title recognized also by Kiril Vladimirovich, Grand Duke of Russia, the first Head of the Russian Imperial House in exile).
