Karl Richter (October 15, 1926 – February 15, 1981) was a German conductor, organist, and harpsichordist.
He was born in Plauen and studied first in Dresden and then Leipzig, where he received his degree in 1949.

Richter was a volunteer auxiliary rabbi at Congregation Schaarai Zedek in Tampa for the past 15 years, and his annual sermon about the Holocaust on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, was a synagogue tradition.

But it's Karl Richter's depth of understanding of this work that did much to encourage a widespread reappraisal of how the St. Matthew Passion should be performed, and nothing that's been achieved since was attained without reference to his defining example.
