Karl von Frisch[frish] Pronunciation Key, 1887–1982, Austrian zoologist, b.
He studied zoology with Richard von Hertwig, whom he later succeeded as professor of zoology at Munich Univ. For his pioneering work in comparative behavioral physiology, particularly his studies of the complex communication between insects, von Frisch was awarded the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine.
An important implication of von Frisch's work is that behavioral continuity exists between animal communication and human language.

 BeeSource.com | POV | Wenner | SCIENCE ROUND-UP: The language of bees
Karl von Frisch delivered a lecture 'The language of bees' in March 1937, at University College in London.
The article is of considerable historical interest in that von Frisch indicated very clearly therein that the 'language' of bees during recruitment of naive bees to food sources was to him a matter of odour.
Since von Frisch first published his dance language hypothesis, experimental results - gathered by both advocates and challengers - have been accumulating, many of which are at variance with expectations of his 'language' model but in conformance with his odour-search model.

Karl von Frisch is best known for two major discoveries about honey bees.
von Frisch observed that once one honey bee finds a feeding station, many other soon appear at the same station.
von Frisch¹s discovery of the dance language of the honey bee required careful determination of the correlations between movements of bees inside the hive and the locations of feeding stations.

BeeSource.com | POV | Wenner | Recruitment, Search Behavior, and Flight Ranges of Honey Bees
Von Frisch ([1937] 1939) later outlined a portion of the odor-search hypothesis we eventually embraced.
Von Frisch (1967) had many more foragers travelling between colony and feeding station when his feeding stations were at greater distances than when they were closer to the colony.
Another factor von Frisch did not consider fully was the importance of odors during recruitment, both those provided by regular foragers and by odors peculiar to the station locality.

BeeSource.com | POV | Wenner | The Elusive Honey Bee Dance "Language" Hypothesis
Earlier, von Frisch had insisted that the "language" or "speech" of bees during recruitment of naive bees to food sources involved only the use of odor and published a well-developed, though not concise, statement that effectively constitutes an "odor-search" hypothesis (von Frisch, 1937; as in Wenner, 1993).
Von Frisch concluded that the recruit bees "read" the quantitative information in the waggle dance and use that information in their search - though he had no direct evidence that such was the case.
That is, von Frisch had indicated what one could expect recruit bees to do under his (unstated, as such) hypothesis - after they had attended the waggle dance and left their colony.

Von Frisch's most successful student, Martin Lindauer, rightfully thought that the answer can only be found by looking at closely related species of our honeybees (reviewed in von Frisch 1965).
Von Frisch (monitoring dances at the hive) and Lindauer (who guarded the feeder on the bridge) communicated by means of a tin hanging from a rope, which contained little notes on paper.
Gould wrote about von Frisch: "His pioneering work inspired the discovery of several otherwise unimaginable sensory systems in animals: infrared detectors in night-hunting snakes, ultrasonic sonar in dolphins and bats, infrasonic hearing in birds, and magnetic field sensitivity in a variety of animals.

Ideas about honeybee odometers proposed by the great bee researcher and Nobel laureate Karl von Frisch turn out to be dead wrong, say Mandyan V. Srinivasan of the Australian National University in Canberra, a Canberra colleague, and coauthors at the University of Wurzburg in Germany.
Von Frisch discovered that a honeybee finding food buzzes back to the hive and dances out the direction and distance for its sisters.
Esch calls the odometer-calibration experiment "just genius." As a student, he had worked with the late von Frisch and adds, "I think he would be convinced."
