The seeds for LaVeyan Satanism were planted in the 1950s, when LaVey and several others formed a group known as the Order of the Trapezoid; the group worked with a combination of magick and LaVey's hedonistic, egoistic philosophy.
LaVey encouraged women to exploit their "femininity" to gain power and pleasure, rather than what he saw as the feminist mentality of "hating your femininity".
LaVey's views echo much of the Marquis De Sade's writings - questioning evidence for a divine, supreme being, and believing in the forces and power of nature instead.

Karla had contested the will citing a Doctors statement that LaVey was heavily medicated and had just come out of a death experience when he was coerced to write the Will.
During this time Blanche and clergy of the Church had begun a vicious campaign against Karla claiming she was not qualified to run the Church, had not contributed to the Church, and went through long periods of not speaking to her father.

LaVey contained the lion, which he had received as a cub in 1964, safely in a cage, but its roars during the night caused such an outcry from his neighbors (who apparently didn't mind the Satanic masses) that LaVey was forced to send the beast away to the San Francisco Zoo.
LaVey came to genuinely believe that his message of aggressive self-interest was a way for individuals to achieve freedom and happiness in their lives.
Karla claimed that Blanche had exerted an "undue influence" over her father, who was "not of sound and disposing mind and was under the influence of medication." In response Blanche posted an Internet statement denying that Karla was the rightful High Priestess of the Church.
