The Karlspreis zu Aachen was proclaimed by the citizens of Aachen in 1949 under the influence of two world wars and has been awarded to personalities or institutions, who have worked extensively on the unification of Europe since 1950.
The president of the European Parliament, the Irishman Pat Cox, was awarded the International Karlspreis 2004 on the traditional date, namely Ascension Day, which was on 20th May this year; the reasoning: “The exceptional personal merits are to be recognised, which Cox acquired due to the imminent expansion of the European Union”.
According to the board of directors, the Karlspreis 2004 is being awarded to the highest representative of the institution, “which gave the process of expansion a decisive quality and dynamic, and upon whom all hope now rests for a further intensification of the settlement procedures.”

John Paul II received the first extraordinary international "Karlspreis" ever awarded for "his outstanding contribution to European integration and his special effort to exert influence from Europe on the world order" ("Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", March 25, 2004).
In presenting the award, Aachen's mayor Jürgen Linden emphasized that Europe experiences the pope as "one of the great spiritual leaders and as a vital and constructive focal point of European development, as a guiding star – especially for many young people – in the search for their way of life" (ibid.).

He was elected president of the ELDR group in the European Parliament in 1998 and was unanimously re-elected Group President in June 1999 following the elections to the European Parliament; he resigned this post when he became President of the European Parliament on January 15 2002.
On 20 May 2004 he was awarded the Karlspreis for his achievements with regard to the enlargement of the European Union and for his work in promoting greater EU democratization.
He did not contest the 2004 elections to the European parliament, and the new parliament elected Josep Borrell Fontelles of Spain as its president on 20 July 2004.

In the presence of the rector of RWTH, Professor Burkhard Rauhut, the major of Aachen, Dr. Jürgen Linden, and the chairman of the "Karlspreis" directorate, Professor Walter Eversheim, he appealed to those present to join in the development of a united Europe.
She was congratulated by the "Karlspreis" laureate with a peck on the cheek and an autograph with a personal birthday greeting.
