 Luther: A Life
Karlstadt had often been a thorn in Luther’s flesh once he began to support him in 1518 — this was not the first time he had in some sense gone further than Luther.
Karlstadt had gone out into the country early in January and got engaged to be married to a sixteen-year-old girl, and later in the month held a great celebration of the wedding itself.
Luther recounted Karlstadt’s obstinacy, his failure to return to Wittenberg and the interview at the inn: ‘He turned to me, snapped his fingers and said "You are nothing to me."’ The long years of seeing Luther usurp his leadership at Wittenberg were too much for Karlstadt, and the quarrel had become bitter and personal.

The disputation between Eck and Karlstadt began at Leipzig on 27 June 1519.
In the first four sessions Eck maintained the thesis that free will is the active agent in the creation of good works, but he was compelled by his opponent to modify his position so as to concede that the grace of God and free will work in harmony toward the common end.

Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt (1486-1541), one of the most prolific authors of the Reformation, is one of the most difficult for historians to classify.
"Among evangelical authors during the years 1518-1525, Karlstadt, after Martin Luther (1483-1546), published the largest number of works in German; and, after Luther's, his works had the second-largest number of editions." Indeed, on these grounds "it is a safe assumption that Karlstadt's activities as a publicist had a major impact."...
