Karman line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kármán line is an internationally designated altitude commonly used to define outer space.
When studying aeronautics and astronautics in the 1950's, Karman calculated that above an altitude of roughly 100 km (~62 miles), a vehicle would have to fly faster than orbital velocity in order to derive sufficient aerodynamic lift from the atmosphere to support itself.
Though the calculated altitude was not exactly 100 km, Karman proposed that 100 km be designated the boundary to space as the round number is more memorable and the calculated altitude varies minutely as certain parameters are varied.

 THE KARMAN IN ITSELF
The duration of the karmans of a jiva is dependent on the tenure of his mind (adhyavasaya), and, therefore, on the strength of the kasayas.
The intensity of the effects of the karman corresponds to the compactness or the karman-matter; it is conditional upon the weakness of strength of the kasayas.
The most sinful a jiva is, the longer the duration of his karman, the stronger the effect of his bad, the weaker that of his good prakrtis, whilst with an increased purity the duration of the bound karman and the intensity of the bad prakrtis decrease and the rasa of the good prakrtis grows (Kg.

Curiously, von Karman got off to a comparatively slow start in his career, partly because of the nature of European academe at the time, partly because of the adverse effects of his rivalry with Ludwig Prandtl (who for many years was deemed the dean of aerodynamics), and partly because of his required military service.
Von Karman in 1902 graduated with distinction from the Royal Joseph University of Polytechnics and Economics in Budapest.
Far from being of mere academic interest, von Karman’s law of turbulence affected almost every aspect of aviation, from the declining field of airships to the barely explored field of rocketry and the supersonic aircraft of the future.

It was apparently Von Karman himself who realised, and proposed to the rest, the very round number of 100 km (very close to the calculated number).
Von Karman presented the result of this work in front of the IAF, which accepted it without much interest, because they were really not concerned with the problem of separating both fields.
Although the Karman Line had been a theoretical construction, it was later demonstrated to be a real thing.

But Theodore Von Karman [(1881-1963), who is considered to be one of the great aeronautical scientists of the twentieth century] had the feeling that there was a difference between the two.
A lot of calculations were made, and finally it was concluded and accepted by all scientists involved, that the boundary could be set at an altitude of around 100 km.
Von Karman presented the result of this work to the IAF, which accepted it without much interest, because they were really not concerned with the problem of separating both fields.

There are two general schools of thought regarding the need for and desirability of arriving soon at a clear line of demarcation between air space and outer space.
The other approach argues that there is no evidence that a demarcation line is needed and that to set one now would be premature and possibly counterproductive.
Some demarcation line in the 50- to 75-mile altitude range may be the most satisfactory—or least unsatisfactory.

Accordingly, 100km is generally taken to be the limit of our atmosphere and therefore the edge of space.
The 100km mark isn't totally arbitrary - it is also termed the Karman line after Theodore von Karman: a pioneer of aeronautics.
Karman calculated that at this altitude the air is so thin that a conventional aircraft would need to be going so fast to get any lift under its wings that it might as well lose them, give up, and be a spacecraft instead.

This was eventually accepted by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, and is sometimes called the Karman Line in his honor.
However, thanks in large part to the X Prize, 100 km is now perceived by the media and the public as the boundary of space, an imaginary line where the final frontier begins.

In practice, people find that metric dimensions are far easier to subdivide by various factors, as it is easier to move to smaller subunits and as it is more common in the metric world to use standardized preferred number sequences.
For example, in the British building industry (see British Standard BS 6750), it is customary to chose major design dimensions (e.g., grid lines on a building plan) as multiples of 300, 600, or 1200 mm.
This size is called the "basic module" and represented by the letter M. Preference is given to the multiples of 3 M (= 300 mm) and 6 M (= 600 mm) of the basic module.

Where does space begin? By Dan Kois
But the FAI's secretary general, Max Bishop, admitted that the choice was "fairly arbitrary." In the mid-1950s the federation, knowing many aeronautic records would be blown away by the coming space age, wanted to declare a point at which aeronautics ended and astronautics began.
An informal group of aeronautics researchers led by Hungarian Theodore Von Karman tried to predict the altitude below which significant lateral thrust would be required to keep a craft flying level.
The 100-kilometer standard, sometimes called the Karman Line, has since been adopted by many agencies and organizations worldwide.
