		ALTHOUGH THE Karmann name has been associated with some of the most beautiful and successful motor cars produced in the last 50 years, it would be wrong to regard Wilhelm Karmann as a car designer.
		Karmann returned to Osnabruck in 1939 with state-of-the-art knowledge of manufacturing techniques, but, instead of cars, he had to reorganise the factory to produce military equipment.
		Wilhelm Karmann said this was done to protect his workers from any disappointment if the prototype was not given the go-ahead and also to reassure VW that no one outside of the two companies had seen the car.

		The two projects on the table at this period was the Karmann version with four seats to transport a complete family; the other one is the famous but rare two seater by Hebmüller, which ended after the factory burnt in 1951.
		The total number of production for the Karmann cabriolet is about 331 000 pieces from 1948 to 1980, and this number makes the VW cariolet one of the most produced convertible in the world.

		In 1948 the Hebmüller and Karmann companies were each engaged by Volkswagen to construct open top cars based on the Beetle, Hebmüller a two seat and Karmann a four seat version.
		The Karmann Beetle cabriolet used the chassis, nose section, fenders, and front and rear lids supplied by Wolfsburg from the Beetle parts bin, with the rest of the body being either fabricated by Karmann or modified by them from standard Beetle panels.
		Wilhelm Karmann died in 1952 at the age of 88 and was succeeded by his son, Wilhelm jnr.
