Most areas in Karonga started receiving rains mid-January 2000 which was a relief to the people that had suffered floods the previous year.
The people of Karonga district were among the worst affected with the waters sweeping across a wide area in Karonga North destroying houses; gardens and crops; livestock and infrastructures such as roads.

The Karonga programme began in 1978 with support from the British Leprosy Relief Association (LEPRA), as a population laboratory for evaluation of tools developed by the IMMLEP (Immunology of Leprosy) component of the WHO/TDR programme (the first skin and serological tests for M. leprae infection and an M. leprae antigen-based vaccine).
It was designed initially as a large cohort study for risk factors of leprosy infection and disease, covering the entire district of Karonga (the population was selected because it had the highest burden of leprosy in that part of Africa).
The Karonga CRS was tailored to maximise the overlap with a population based HIV cohort study (Family Health Study) that was conducted during the previous research programme.

 Karonga District
Karonga is the northernmost district of Malawi, bordered by Lake Malawi on the East, by the Songwe River (border with Tanzania) on the North and the Nyika Plateau and highlands on the West and South.
The district was isolated until 1981, when the national highway was extended into the district from the south.
Karonga is hot and dry from September to December, rainy from January to May, and cool and dry June to August.

As part of the Karonga Prevention Study, a longstanding epidemiologic study of TB and HIV in a rural area of northern Malawi (5,6), persons suspected of having TB in Karonga District are identified at the hospital and peripheral clinics.
The RFLP patterns of the 12 Beijing genotype strains from Karonga District are shown in Figure 1.
Until 1996, the Karonga Prevention Study was funded primarily by LEPRA (The British Leprosy Relief Association) and ILEP (The International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Organizations) with contributions from the WHO/UNDP/World Bank Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases.

According to an ADB release, the project aims to "improve accessibility and mobility of the rural population in Karonga and Chitipa districts to markets, social and economic facilities, and promote economic integration between rural and urban areas," in accordance with Malawi government policies.
At project completion, it is estimated that overall transport costs and access time to socio-economic facilities would be reduced by respectively 60 and 70 percent, according to calculations made by Lilongwe officials, who had solicited the ADB loan.
The project is expected to produce a two-lane 46-km bitumen surfaced road from Karonga, located at the shores of Lake Malawi, to Lufilya in the interior as well as the rehabilitation of five rural roads totalling 200 km.

The choice of Karonga district was due to two main reasons: firstly because CARD was working in the district in 1999 and secondly, Karonga was the most severely hit district by floods that year.
These districts are Nsanje, Chikwawa, Thyolo, Phalombe, Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba in the Southern Region, Mchinji, Salima, Ntcheu and Nkhotakota in the Central Region, Karonga and Rumphi in the Northern Region.
In Karonga, and Nkhota kota, the emergency is at Post Crisis phase because people have resettled either with relatives and are out of danger.

The closure of the Karonga museum by sheriffs last Friday has sparked the anger of the Uraha Foundation, a partner in the project, alleging that the sheriffs targeted the wrong party.
Opened by President Bingu wa Mutharika in December last year, the museum boasts of rare artifacts such as the Malawisaurus, a dinosaur excavated in Karonga, believed to have lived millions of years ago.
The museum was built with a grant from a $300,000 grant from the European Union.

Abstract: The interaction between AIDS virus infection and Mycobacterial diseases, i.e., tuberculosis and leprosy, is presented in terms of preliminary data from the Karonga district in Malawi, and in view of desirable research goals.
The Karonga district has 140,000 people, about 70,000 between 15-50 years, and a leprosy incidence of 1.2/1000 yearly.
Local data in Karonga show an increase in incidence of clinical TB since 1980, although whether this is due to better case reporting is unknown.

Despite an overall food surplus in 2001/02, the maize stocks at both national and household levels are not adequate to meet maize demand.
Judging from press reports, the floods were not very serious, especially when compared with last year’s experience, but should serve as a warning and a reminder to prepare contingency and response plans as there is still a possibility of major floods occurring.
In Karonga, maize supply was also boosted by a huge inflow of maize from Tanzania, some of which is finding its way to the Central and Southern Regions as well.

Specimens from Lake Malombe and the southern part of the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi also have very slender pharyngeal bones, while those from Karonga have stout pharyngeal bones with a large toothed area.
A very similar trend in morphology is shown by the closely related Oreochromis karongae.

The rise of the already high prices has worsened the food security situation as prices are being pushed beyond the reach of the majority of the population in the rural areas.
Significant quantities of maize from Tanzania continue to enter the country through Karonga district, some of which is getting down to the central and southern regions.
Very few areas appear to be relatively better off and these include Chitipa and Karonga in the north because of bordering Tanzania where most of the maize is coming from by private traders.

Heavy rains at the end of December 01 and the first week of January 02 caused flooding in the 4 districts of Chikwawa, Dedza, Salima, and Karonga after swollen Mwanza and Shire rivers burst their banks.
Chikwawa district was the most severely hit with 1,750 households in 13 villages being affected.
Meanwhile, they are considering submitting a Rapid Response request for immediate relief in Chikwawa and Karonga.
