Karpal Singh Ram Singh or simply Karpal Singh is a Malaysian politician and a lawyer by profession.
On the 7 September 2004, Karpal Singh was given the choice of apologizing within 3 days and face 10 days of suspension or suspension from Parliament with all privileges such as allowances stripped from him, for a period of 6 months.
Karpal was injured in a car accident in early 2005 and is currently recovering from the injuries.

Karpal said Arifin erred when he dismissed the defence application for a 12-day postponement to prepare a fresh notice of alibi after the prosecution amended the date of the alleged offence from "May 1994" to "between January and March 1993".
Karpal also argued that the provision of the alibi notice under section 402(A) of the Criminal Procedure Code is one that the court has no discretion to waive.

In his submission, Karpal also said that High Court judge Arifin Jaka, who handed out the sentence to Anwar, was wrong in not allowing the defence application to recall the prosecution’s star witness to question his conviction for a khalwat (‘close proximity’) offence at the Syariah Court.
Karpal continued that Arifin’s conduct is questionable as the judge went to great length to justify the credibility of the prosecution’s witnesses, in particular Azizan.
Karpal said the prosecution’s case is weak as it was saddled on the evidence of its star witness Azizan.

 Muslim schoolgirls hire Malaysian lawyer over headscarf row
Karpal Singh, who is also deputy chairman of Malaysia's opposition Democratic Action Party, told AFP he was preparing papers and would file the case with the Singapore High Court "as soon as possible".
Singh was one of the lawyers who represented Anwar Ibrahim after the former Malaysian deputy prime minister was put on trial for corruption and sodomy.
Singh added that he would need approval from the Singaporean Bar to practise law here, although he noted he had been allowed in the past to practise in Singapore, the last time in 1998.

In a statement commenting on caretaker prime minister Mahathir Mohamad's controversial action in calling for the convening of the 10th Parliamentary session, Karpal said the convening before the swearing in of the cabinet was unconstitutional.
Karpal said such a contradiction does not exist in India, another Commonwealth country whose system of governance has been largely influenced by the British.
Karpal also called upon the Attorney-General to respond to his arguments, particularly with regards to Article 55 (1) which states that the King shall from time to time summon Parliament and allow six months to elapse between the last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first meeting in the next session.

She said that Karpal Singh took exception to the fact that the impugned judgement was embodied in two separate written judgements delivered by two members of the first quorum whilst the third member did not write any judgement at all.
She said Karpal Singh contended that each judgement should have dealt with conviction and sentence jointly rather than have the subject matters of the appeals split up as was done in Anwar’s appeals.
She also said Karpal Singh had questioned the constitutionality of Section 94 (2) contending that interference on the part of the senior most judge in the country to influence the outcome of the appeal, thereby impinging on the judiciary independence of individual judges.

VETERAN lawyer and opposition Member of Parliament Mr Karpal Singh yesterday reminded the High Court of his ample experience with the law, referring twice to cases involving himself in his submission.
But Mr Karpal rejected the public demand for an apology, telling the court instead that "no lawyer can do his job if, every day, somebody will demand apologies for what was said in court".
Mr Karpal is representing Sukma Dermawan in his joint trial with the former deputy premier, but his submission was wide-ranging.

Following the ousting of Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in September 1998, DAP co-founded the Barisan Alternatif coalition along with PAS and the newly formed Keadilan.
However, the coalition did not work out very well for the DAP, with two of its top leaders, Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh losing their Parliamentary seats in the 1999 election; the DAP managed to win only 10 out of 193 seats in Parliament.
In 2004, he stepped down in favour of Karpal Singh as the new Chairman.
