Karsten Obarski is possibly THE most elusive Grandfather of the Amiga.
Obarski was a part of that team, working as both a musician and programmer.
Obarski's disappearance and inactivity are a real tragedy for those that are ardent supporters of the demo music scene.

Karsten Obarski - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Karsten Obarski (born May 11, 1960), handle "Obi", is considered a pioneer of the demo scene for the creation of the program "Ultimate Soundtracker", the ancestor of all Trackers.
The author of this article was not able to find out which role Karsten Obarski had in the development of these games.
"Rotator" is a special case: when asked about his own compositions, Obarski said he liked track 3 from "Rotator" very much - but the author of this article was unable to find any music from this game created by him.

Later tracker software, most famously OctaMED, allowed for eight channels of music or more, whilst special hardware could allow for 16-bit playback.
Karsten Obarski's original Ultimate Soundtracker, often just called Soundtracker, was originally an internal development tool for EAS (a German Software Company) which goes some way towards explaining its programmer-friendly interface.
The company eventually released it as a commercial product.

I just wanted to point out that the maker of the music was the Legend Karsten Obarski who made the first SoundTracker which fast became a standard and today ten years later the newest tracker is based on that.
It's also rather ironic that the "secret" connection Karsten Obarski and modern Amiga MOD music was revealed to us twice in one issue: once from Sidewinder, and again now.
Obarski, please feel free to send us that information; it would not only provide a sense of closure to our look back at Crystal Hammer, but also give us an intriguing connection to those earlier days.

Electronics Arts was part of them, and a 21 year old German employee, a certain Karsten Obarski, didn't know he would write a part of the musical computers history.
So, Karsten Obarski, as a programmer and musician (remember that at this time, it was frequent that one person could make a whole game: coding, music, gfx), decided to code his own music software...
And this is one of the reasons that pushed Karsten Obarski to stop the development of Soundtracker.

 Station Information - MOD
However, the biggest advantage of MOD family over standard MIDI files is that MOD includes its own audio samples and should sound almost exactly the same from one player to another.
MOD files are often referred to as "Tracker modules", and composing modules is known as "Tracking", simply because the first ever module creating program was Soundtracker, created by Karsten Obarski in 1987.
Soundtracker was cloned many times, with programs such as "Noisetracker", and "Protracker" being direct descendants from the original Soundtracker code, and others such as "MED" and "Oktalyzer" being written from scratch.

Karsten Obarski, IIRC, is the "father" of Soundtracker whom basically pioneered the whole concept of tracking/trackers/mods.
Musically, his mods were noted for being memorable and unique, having his own distinctive style - musicians/trackers practically learnt and based their music on his mods.
Many people consider Karsten Obarski (for what he has done for Amiga music) comparable to Rob hubbard on the C64...although TBH I don't really recall any of his music

In 1988 and later Karsten Obarski's original program was hacked, ripped off, and improved by various programmers from cracking and demo groups.
Old Soundtracker modules that are likely to be found in any classic collection are those composed by Karsten Obarski himself, such as famous game sounds from Amegas, Crystal Hammer, Ralleymaster (sic!), or Sarcophaser, to name a few, and others done in 1987 and 1988, most noticably the unforgotten tunes by SLL.
Thus: freq = 716 kHz / ((240-bpm)*122) [freq] = kHz Rumours state that Karsten Obarski made a failure upon calculating that default speed and planned to get a default of 50 Hz.

 [R][info page]
While the Commodore 64 and the SID chip set the stage for tracking (the act of making module music), it was not until 1987 that module music as it exists today started in earnest.
The event which set the foundation for module music was the creation of a program titled Ultimate Soundtracker by a 21 year-old German employee at Electronic Arts, Karsten Obarski (Tribute).
Newer versions of Karsten Obarski's original Ultimate Soundtracker, as well as the large number of similar programs, now allowed for composers to sample their own sounds and so move past the rather limited palette of pre-sampled sounds available previously.

The playback from machine to machine should replay 100% correctly (either through FastTracker or another music playback program) due to the fact that these file formats hold a sampled sound copy of each instrument within the file itself.
The tracker data format was originally invented by Karsten Obarski around 1987, and was quickly copied by lots of other people around the world.
The original "SoundTracker" is an Amiga based program, which could play back 4 channels of stereo sound (the Amiga's standard hardware limit, though clever audio mixing programs could produce several "Virtual Channels").
