John Stathatos: Review of Alison Wilding, "Blue"
Alison Wilding's latest London exhibition confirmed that whatever last year's Turner prize jury may in its wisdom have decreed, she is one of the most serious and exciting artists in the country.
The selection of new work on show at Karsten Schubert was dominated by Blue, a large (45" x 88" x 117") sculpture in translucent pvc and patinated brass, the latest and most successful in the line of sculptures made of slotted, interlocking strips of pvc which began in 1990 with Inland.
In this context, Schubert's placing of it under the window in the first-floor gallery was inspired, as this is a work which very definitely benefits from natural light.

KARSTEN SCHUBERT One of the things we haven't talked about is that strange feeling you can get when you walk into a re-hang of a museum that it looks like somebody has done the planning in his office with a slide projector, without any regard for the physical reality of the objects.

Gallery money at the root of artistic divorce
Karsten Schubert announced the closure of his West End gallery after Rachel Whiteread, who won the award in 1993 for a concrete cast of a two-up, two-down house in east London, moved her work to Anthony d'Offay, a wealthier and more-established dealer.
Other figures in the modern art world, however, said they were not surprised at the decision by such an established patron as Mr Schubert to close his gallery on the strength of a single artist's departure.
Having devoted several years to nurturing Miss Whiteread's career, Mr Schubert is said to have regarded her departure, described by another artist as a "bloody divorce", as a personal betrayal.

Schubert believes that the 70-year protection currently in force is "nonsense", though artists need copyright protection, the ideal solution is a combination of commercial and moral rights.
Schubert mentioned that in France, art royalties are distributed to about five families, but I would say this is probably anomalous, as from my experience of working for companies that are involved with collecting and distributing royalties, this is not usually the case.
However, Schubert made the great point that "work takes on a life separate from its creator", which is something that is often forgotten (though not usually in the art world!).

Michael Landy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like much of his later work, it was intended as a comment on consumerism and society.
In 1992, Landy started an association with Karsten Schubert by making Closing Down Sale for his gallery, an installation made up of a number of objects in shopping trolleys labelled "BARGAIN" and recorded announcements encouraging visitors to buy.
The work was intended as a comment on the commodification of art, and might be seen as a precursor of sorts to Breakdown, a work which produced no salable objects.

Even worse, critics and curators were both made obsolete by the 1980s art boom, according to veteran London art dealer Karsten Schubert, author of The Curator's Egg (One-Off Press, London, 2000).
Schubert's book is subtitled "the evolution of the museum concept from the French Revolution to the present day," and in fact it's a quick skip along the route from the British Museum in 1759 to contemporary supercollectors like Giuseppe Panza di Biumo, Heiner Friedrich and Philippa de Menil, and Charles Saatchi.
According to Schubert, today's museum is newly positioned at the center of cultural discourse, surrounded by a "minefield" of demands from artists, politicians, patrons and fellow museum staffers.

There is former gallery owner Karsten Schubert, who together with private dealer Thomas Dane put up the final four-figure sum that made Break Down happen.

We see Schubert in the documentary chaperoning Landy back into consumer society, fitting him out in a new set of clothes and shoes from the high street for £250.

I'm not sure if it's right to place such value judgements on peoples' work -- although it is tempting to do so -- but I agree with his line of thought.

The importance of the Damien Hirst show Freeze (1988) was much vaunted at the time and, in the way that the media had of creating an ear piercing and monotonous feed-back on any subject, the assertion that the show was "historically" significant had gained an almost biblical authority even by 1993.
This assertion was repeated by the gallerists who went on to represent that generation of artists in the early 90s Karsten Schubert and Jay Jopling.
In fact we can now see that Freeze (like the Salon de Refusé, the Armoury show, Their Chromakey and Ours, the Situationist and Fluxus events) conformed to the law of inverse perspective; they got bigger (and continue to get bigger) the further away we get from them.
