		The farmers of Karuzi province were among Africa's poorest, but they had won at least one of nature's lotteries: for as long as anyone could remember their corner of Burundi had been free of malaria.
		Some farmers cleared papyrus from the lower wetlands to cultivate rice, not realising that by releasing an oil on the water's surface the papyrus had acted as a barrier against certain mosquitoes.
		Shuttling between the Institute of Trop ical Medicine in Anvers, outside Brussels, and a one-room laboratory with a rickety wooden chair in Buhiga, Karuzi's main town, her mission is to prevent another disastrous epidemic.

		MSF called on the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to improve the food supply pipeline to Burundi to enable a general food distribution to affected populations in the north of the country and to ensure a consistent supply of food (corn-soya blend and oil) for existing feeding programs.
		An MSF nutritional survey conducted in November 2000 in the province, showed that a quarter of these children were affected by malnutrition.
		A serious malaria epidemic continues in the north of the country, with 30,000 cases per week being treated in the province of Karuzi.

		BUJUMBURA, 24 Feb 2005 (IRIN) - At least 20 people have died of hunger in Burundi's east-central province of Karuzi, a group of parliamentarians from the province said on Wednesday following a visit to the area.
		An assistant information officer for the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Burundi, Isidore Nteturuye, could not confirm whether the deaths were caused by hunger.
		He told IRIN on Thursday that Karuzi was a "zone where malaria is endemic".

		One of the largest Christian relief and development organizations in the world is working to combat malnutrition in the north-eastern Burundi province of Karuzi by educating communities about proper nutrition and hygiene.
		While social injustice and economic deprivation are the main causes of malnutrition among the vulnerable population in Burundi, a lack of public awareness regarding healthy eating habits complicates the nutritional issues in the country, reported World Vision.
		Funded by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), the project targets over 17,500 vulnerable households in the province and is focused on assessing the malnutrition levels among children, improving the nutritional status and preventing diseases among children and their mothers in Karuzi province.
