aneuploidy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
To determine the (diploid) number of chromosomes of an organism, cells can be locked in metaphase in vitro (in a reaction vial) with colchicine.
These cells are then stained (the name chromosome was given because of their ability to be stained), photographed and arranged into a karyogram (an ordered set of chromosomes, Fig.
In females, one of the two X chromosomes is inactive and can be seen under a microscope as Barr bodies.

In genetics, chromomal translocations are the breaking and inappropriate merging of two different chromosomes.
It is detected on cytogenetics or a karyogram of affected cells.
Translocations generally occur between regions of the DNA that are homologous.

Karyogram of the chromosomes revealed monocentric chromosomes and indistinct centromeres.
The X1 X2 were not identified in the karyogram, however, it was assumed since the specimens used were female.
The total average length of the chromosomes were computed to be 5.075 cm and the mean of the average relative length was 0.08335cm under 1000X magnification with zoom lens camera and picture enlarged to 5R.

Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The metaphase spreads were analyzed, and the karyogram of the averaged TRITC/FITC ratio chromosomes and the FR profiles of all metaphase spreads were drawn.
In the same way that it is possible for a case to be ascertained over several metaphases, it is also possible for a super karyogram to be generated through the combination of several cases of a tumor entity.(summary of a series of CGH experiments of a particular tumor entity).
Through the comparison of individual cases with super karyograms of different tumor classes it should be possible to carry out a classification of the individual case.

CGH and SKY are cytogenetic screening tests that allow one to survey tumor genomes for numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations.
CGH is based on quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization and produces a karyogram of chromosomal imbalances in tumor genomes.
SKY allows the visualization of all human (and other species) chromosomes in different colors based on the measurement of discrete and chromosomes specific emission spectra by means of spectral imaging.

By the CGHeval program the CGH karyograms of different metaphases of one tumor sample are represented as a CGH sum karyogram.
At first all chromosomes of a selected metaphase must be stretched and normalized in order to build the basis for computing the sum karyogram.
The 'Chromosome' labeled box in the upper right corner of CGH Evaluate form can be used for viewing the homologues chromosomes (1 or 2) or the mean chromosome of both (1+2).

a spectral karyotype (SKY) is much like what the text describes as a karyogram, since it portrays all of the organism's chromosomes visualized.
The main difference is that it uses the chromosomes own specific emmission spectra, and measures them by spectral imaging.
Chromosomal abnormalities like translocations (as seen in lymphomas that originate in mice deficient for the ataxia telangiectasia gene) can be identified do to the color patterns produced.

PAG-XIII (P409) Development Of Chromosome-Specific Markers And Integration Of Genetic Map To Chromosome Map In Brassica ...
A molecular cytogenetic map of Brassica campestris (2n = 2x = 20) was constructed on the basis of a pachytene DAPI karyogram.
We describe a mitotic metaphase and pachytene karyogram in which all chromosomes can be identified based on chromosome length, centromere position, heterochromatin patterns, and the positions of repetitive sequences visualized by FISH.
Furthermore, we identified at least two chromosome-specific BAC clones for each chromosome (chromosome 1 to 10) that correspond to 10 linkage groups of genetic map.

I vaguely remember a reference to the material on human chromosome #2 being split into 2 different chromosomes in the chimp.
I probably still have a copy of the karyograms she showed us and my notes (I know for a fact I still have a copy of the first karyogram I did for my class).
